Any Maui Residents Some Hurricane Info Would Be Really Appreciated. I'm A Bit Worried.
I can't contact my daughter or son in law. Zero connection. Is Douglas as bad as it looks like? I'm scared to death for them. They own a house on the mtns. behind Kihei

Go to mauinews.com. Yesterday they were saying Douglas downgraded to Category 1. Having lived on Maui through several hurricane watches, the scare was way beyond the reality every time. The last time in 2018 we had to sit in a hotel for five days because flights had been canceled...and there was no hurricane of significance after all that.
Hawaii also freaked out from Covid, shutting down everything when they had the fewest deaths in the US.

Mr Sjstill, thank you for the update. I 100% appreciate it! Not being able to talk to them got Moms and Pops a bit on edge.

I had the pleasure of being in Hawaii on vacation during Hurricane Iwa in 1982. I have been through many major hurricanes since then, and I can say Hawaii is much more prepared these days. Forcasting is much better. Here is where you get the official information:
My wife and I were actually kids on Hickam AFB during Ewa, living less than a mile apart. We didn’t actually meet though for 4 more years and nearly 5000 miles

^^^^^^^^^^ Small world. We were staying on the North Shore and drove through squalls to get to the airport. They were still flying people into Kaui which took the brunt of the storm. We flew to Hilo that day. The tourists that flew into Kaui were stuck there for three days as their hotel was in the ocean. They were pretty unhappy. We liked the Big Island, The people there were very kind and friendly.

We’re good out here. Heavy rain earlier but the sun is coming out now. Didn’t love waking up to wailing siren but that was the worst of it for me. This message has been edited. Last edited by: P210,
