ScoutmasterI guess I have mixed feelings. I enjoyed college and pro sports in my younger years. I think things have changed a bit.
We lived in Tuscaloosa, Alabama for 18 mos, less than a mile from the stadium. The town is dominated by college football. The local quip, "there are 3 F's in life, Faith-Family-Football". Then add "but not necessarily in that order", ie football, and winning the game - hating the opponent, supersedes everything else. There is no right and wrong, only how much $$ you make. The Alabama sportscaster mentioned during a broadcast, "if you aren't cheating, you are only cheating yourself".
The football program does generate lots of money for scholarships, students who otherwise couldn't afford an education. But at what cost?

That is too bad. I have never been an Alabama fan for various reasons. The animosity of some Alabama fans was reflected by the fan who poisoned the centuries old oaks at Auburn.

GeorgeairWatched Austin Peay/Central Arkansas on prime time. Commented to my wife I bet those ratings are higher than any FCS game ever.
Until last week I thought Austin Peay was just something you did after S. Texas BBQ and beer.

maxdogWell Baylor and Univ of Houston had agreed to play Sat. Sept 19. Baylor cancelled at the last minute. Teams like Baylor and Univ of Texas like to start their seasons with a big win by playing teams from “lesser” conferences. UH is always a wild card. Guess Baylor didn’t wanna take a chance on getting beat. Disappointing. I was looking forward to the game. Baylor should be good this year. UH has a new coach and might be a surprise.
