Huawei says US ban will cost it $30B in lost sales
BY CHRIS MILLS RODRIGO - 06/17/19 08:44 AM EDT

The Hill > https://thehill.com/policy/tec...it-30b-in-lost-sales

“We did not expect they would attack us on so many aspects,” CEO Ren Zhengfei said at the company's headquarters, according to Reuters.

“We cannot get components supply, cannot participate in many international organizations, cannot work closely with many universities, cannot use anything with U.S. components, and cannot even establish connection with networks that use such components.”

Ren added that he expects a revival in business in 2021, the first time a new administration could possibly take control of the White House.

The Department of Commerce blacklisted Huawei in May, a move that barred U.S. firms from working with the company, arguing Huawei's products pose a national security risk."

China. They spy on us. They are fortifying their military positions. They sell fake / toxic prescription medications and supplements. They sell toxic dog food. They pirate all kinds of products and brands. They don’t honor copyrights. They make cheap products that aren’t worth the price. They make dangerous products that lead to injuries and death that go beyond caveat emptor.

Why do Americans buy Chinese products?

Third-party contractors — our weakest cyber link — need to be held accountable

"If a poll were taken and the top threats to our national and cybersecurity were voted on, the usual suspects would be easy to name: China, Russia, North Korea and Iran. You’d be half right. Senators weigh potential security risks from Chinese-made drones
BY MAGGIE MILLER - 06/18/19 06:38 PM EDT

The Hill > https://thehill.com/regulation...-chinese-made-drones

Members of the Senate Commerce security subcommittee examined the impact of banning Chinese-made drones, or components for drones, during a hearing on Tuesday.

The senators compared the debate on drones to the recent decision by the Department of Commerce to blacklist Chinese telecommunications giant Huawei in May, a move that barred U.S. firms from working with the company.

Implementation of the ban was delayed by 90 days to give tech companies more time to prepare for the change. Huawei has denied it poses a risk to the United States.

Drones have also been seen as potential national security risks in recent weeks following an industry advisory issued by the Department of Homeland Security in May that warned companies that Chinese-made drones could breach organizations' networks."......

If Walmart is not the # 1 retail store they are certainly in the top few. Walk into any of their stores and see how many products you find that are made in the U.S.

I try to avoid buying Chinese-made products, but many times there is no practical alternative.

President Trump's administration has made great strides in bringing manufacturing back to our country, but there is still a long way to go.

Ammo Smile That's why ammo is one of the few, very few things I but at Walmart. And even then only when I don't buy in bulk.

Yup.

I've purchased four (4) IP surveillance cameras since late last year. All Chinese (Dahua) and all direct from a vendor in China. Tried not to do that, but there was no way around it--short of paying double what these cost. Over $300/camera was out of the question.

The thing is: American manufacturing can do it. Motorola Mobility, back before Google acquired Motorola, then sold Motorola Mobility to Lenovo, proved it. So why doesn't American manufacturing do it?

There is, but it's going to take more than the big, unwieldy stick of tariffs to get there. American manufacturers have to want to make the products that Americans and the rest of the world want.

Rarely shop there, either. Sure, you can get tools that are often "good enough," for cheap. I'd rather buy good tools that are a joy to use.

........"Researchers from U.S.-Israeli cyber security firm Cybereason reported the hacks of companies in more than 30 countries.

The researchers said the goal of the hackings was to collect information on people working in government, law enforcement and politics.

Cybereason's chief executive, Lior Div, told Reuters that the hackers used tools that have been connected to other attacks ascribed to China.

“For this level of sophistication it’s not a criminal group. It is a government that has capabilities that can do this kind of attack,” he said. "............

US cyberattack took out Iran's ability to target oil tankers: report
BY MAGGIE MILLER - 08/28/19 05:10 PM EDT

The Hill > https://thehill.com/policy/cyb...t-oil-tankers-report

=====================================

.........
"U.S. Cyber Command targeted a network run by Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps, Iran’s paramilitary forces, that U.S. intelligence reported was involved in an attack on American oil tankers earlier this year.

Iran is still working to get all its systems back online and recover data that was lost during the June cyberattack, according to the Times.

The cyberattack took place the same day President Trump called off planned military strikes on Iran in retaliation for shooting down an unarmed U.S. surveillance drone. Iran claimed the drone was in its airspace, while U.S. officials said it was in international airspace.

The White House has not commented on the Times story."............

Acting DNI Maguire describes 'cyber war' as greatest threat to the country
BY MAGGIE MILLER - 09/26/19 12:01 PM EDT

The Hill > https://thehill.com/policy/cyb...hreat-to-the-country

DNI ISSUES CYBER THREAT WARNING: Acting Director of National Intelligence Joseph Maguire on Thursday testified that cyber threats are the most significant risks the nation faces and noted that the protection of U.S. election systems is "the most important job" of the intelligence community.

"We do face significant threats, I'd say No. 1 is not necessarily kinetic, it's cyber, this is a cyber war," Maguire said while testifying before the House Intelligence Community about the whistleblower complaint regarding President Trump. "We talk about whether or not the great competition is taking place with Russia and China, and we are building ships and weapons to do that, but in my estimation the great competition with these countries is taking place right now and is doing that in the cyber realm."

Maguire made these comments after being asked by Rep. Will Hurd (R-Texas) what he saw as the "greatest threats" to the country in his capacity as leader of the intelligence community, particularly as Thursday marked the first time for Maguire to testify before the House Intelligence Committee.

Maguire also zeroed in on threats to U.S. elections, and emphasized the importance of keeping the election process free from foreign interference.

"I think the greatest challenge that we do have is to make sure we maintain the integrity of our election system," Maguire said. "We know right now that there are foreign powers that are trying to get us to question the validity of whether or not our elections are valid."

He emphasized that "first and foremost, I think that protecting the sanctity of our elections within the United States, whether it be national, city, state, local is perhaps the most important job that we have with the intelligence community."

Maguire's remarks were made in the midst of a hearing focused on the disclosure by an anonymous whistleblower ..........
