I hate Harvard. Average GPA is estimated now at 3.85. Everybody gets an "A"

Harvard University is the wealthiest academic institution globally, boasting an endowment of approximately $53 billion

Harvard Health Services office sent a flier to graduate students, encouraging them to participate in the SNAP Benefits Sign-Up event in April. The flier read, "Fuel your body & stock your pantry. Did you know that grad students may qualify for assistance paying for food & groceries?"

In response to the concerns, a Harvard spokesperson reached out to Motherboard via email, explaining that the informational session sought to assist students in signing up for the federal program. The session aimed to provide guidance on creating inexpensive yet nutritious meals to support the students' well-being.

why should average typical taxpayers pay for food stamps for people in Harvard grad school ?

Harvard pays its graduate students — who work for the university doing research and teaching classes, while getting their degree — $40,000. That’s often not enough to cover housing, food and other expenses, especially living in Cambridge, Mass, where the cost of living is 73% higher than the national average.

The Harvard Graduate Students Union argued the university should pay its approximately 4,000 graduate students more

Typical of the Ivy League. They want them to apply for foodstamps but have the largest endowment ever. Makes you hate them even more.$53.2 billion as of June 2021.

Going on Harvard’s Student Employment Office site graduate students can work up to 40 hours a week.

So why can’t they get a part time job?
If housing is so expensive how about roommates?
Or maybe Harvard need to tap into their 53 Billion dollar endowment fund to increase their pay scale and or build student housing?

What B.S.!

Even though they are a private institution I am betting they get some Federal monies based upon the percentage of their enrollment being on or eligible for food stamps and reduced food payments.

Our kids go to private school and at our back to school open house/drop off your supplies night this year, our principal asked everyone to apply for food stamps and reduced lunches because they get a larger percentage of funding from the feds even if folks just apply. Now, we are very very much a blue collar private school but this was a very strange request in my opinion.
I am not sure if this is a new federal set of funds or even what the allocation is.
This has never been asked of us before and we receive a financial breakdown for the school each year, that is supposed to include all monies in and out.
There has never been any federal funding noted in these balance sheets we have received.
The only federal money I have seen in the budget was from a grant our school won to better their STEAM room equipment.

I am very interested to ask about this because I am wondering if this is some sort of government ploy to be able to have more control during COVID like situations.
As our school only closed for the end of March, April, and May of 2020 and were back to full in person operation come August of 2020 when most other schools were not in person for that entire 2nd year of school.

That $53 billion at a very modest percentage return would barely fund my own Jefferson County Public School district budget. I’m sure Harvard has much higher standards of taste and style than the commoners school district so that endowment might not go as far as it would seem.

Ha!
When I was in grad school at Texas A&M I started out making $400 per month and when I left I was raking in a whopping $450/ month!

The main benefit was that I didn’t have to pay tuition which would have been several thousand per semester.

There investments have been doing very well over the years as they literally have some of the best investors on the payroll.

I don't have a lot of sympathy for this type of garbage.

I paid my way through school. That meant I had to start in community college to knock out basic classes cheap. Then I had to scrimp, and save, and I worked two jobs to cover my tuition and other basic needs. I had to live at home but they didn't provide much other than shelter. I had my part of the chores which was lawn, driveway (winter) and other things including cooking.

I was typically working, in class, on duty (FD) or sleeping. Sleep was not guaranteed with the FD and in that period I pulled a 74hr week without sleep.

I had to stay local as I couldn't afford anything else but I still got a good education. I had to pay for it myself as due to my parents income, I didn't qualify for hardly any financial assistance. My parents didn't pay for anything and I wasn't doing a loan. One semester I fell short $150 so my parents covered that so I could stay full time.

I never got the 'college' experience that most did. Sure I had fun too but it was in measured doses and usually involved trade time (FD guys will get that). In exchange I learned a LOT of lessons most don't in college.

I have very little sympathy for the kids then or now that are in the parent pay plan, or did the grants/loans/aid plan and are burning someone else's money while they party until they puke.

It used to irritate the hell out of me when I was coaching collegiate hockey and a player would come looking to bum $6 for skate sharpening or $4 for laces, or a mouth guard at a game, then 3 weeks later be off to Aruba for spring break or lost $8K in Vegas when we were there to play UNLV and shrugged it off as no big deal.

Perfect!
I applaud Harvard for starting to teach their students real life skills that work. I believe in the future, a diploma from Harvard should guarantee that you're on unemployment.
