There are lots of good ways of saving money. Selecting your own mushrooms....no. Upside is a few dollars saved. Downside is risk of liver failure.

Unless you know someone who is an expert and who is willing to eat them alongside you, I'd recommend a hard pass.

Go ahead and eat them, Q.

It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience....either way. Wink

Get your mushrooms at HEB. Two weeks ago the local had four types of mushrooms on sale, bella, shiitake, portabello, and button! All half-price! We made San Bei Gu (Three Cup Mushroom), and a fritatta. A poor man's feasts!

My mom was in the mycological society here in the PNW when I was a kid, and we often went foraging for wild mushrooms. But you really have to know what you are doing. There are many poisonous mushrooms that look very similar to edible varieties. I would recommend buying them to be safe.

my first thought was Jack-o-lantern mushrooms. I would avoid it. I did get a 8 lb chicken mushroom up in NH that was delicious. I am not so enthusiastic about trying to foraging here in FL.

I’ve gotta say that the majority of mushrooms have gills. Most aren’t poisonous, and many are good.

You could say the same thing about fish, but in either case I'm not eating one I found in the woods behind my house.

12131 has not posted at all since last night.

Wonder if he ate them and is now suffering the consequences.

No! Please do not eat those mushrooms.
Honey Fungus (probably Armillaria mellea) is what I think that is.

While many believe that these types of mushroom are edible there have been reports of poisonings and I would think it just isn't worth the risk.
