Longer and bigger screws are not the desired fix. The screw are stripped out. Could I use gorilla glue and reset the screws. That does not seem like a good option either.

Tap a wood kitchen match stick coated with wood glue into the hole, trim off the excess, then re-use the existing screw.

1- Take a small piece of scrap wood and sharpen the end until it resembles a pencil point.
2- Coat it with some glue and tap it into the stripped out hole. Let it set.
3- Shave it off flush with the surface of the door with a sharp chisel or what ever.
4- Drill a piolet hole and replace the screw.

Easiest fix is to coat a golf tee with wood glue and drive it into the hole. Cut off the part of the tee hanging out of the hole, let the glue dry, and you'll be all set.

Ultimately, any wood item you can glue tightly in the hole and re-tap should work fine.

Thanks guys. Not a golfer so no tee's. Did the match trick with wood glue. Letting it set up and then will re-install the screws.

Marking that for later use. Had a few doors with loose hinges (prior owner's kids must've hung on the doors) & used longer screws to fix.

When I need to, I use toothpicks dipped in glue to get the job done.

In a pinch, you can also stuff fine steel wool in the hole and thread into that. Not as good as a wood plug, but expedient.

I prefer to mix up a small batch of marine-tex epoxy and pack the hole with it, let it dry, drill a new hole and thread screw in. The epoxy will attach firmly to the surrounding wood and marine tex is soft enough that you can easily drill a new pilot hole.

Hey - did anyone recommend a matchstick or other small piece of wood, coated in wood glue, jammed in the hole and shaved off once the glue sets?

If the screw hole is really bunged up, a drywall anchor has been known to work as well.

Depending on how ragged the original screw hole is you could drill it out with a 1/4" twist drill and glue a 1/4" dowel in, then drill a pilot hole. This works to move a hole that has wandered out of position too

I see Shugart woke up when he heard Strippers and holes.
A golf tee works really well too.
