My Amsec safe is getting difficult to open. I would say it feels like the bars are sticking when I turn the handle. It’s an electric key pad with fairly fresh battery.

If you do, what do you lubricate and what do you use?

Yep. Metal moving parts and linkage. Just a quick shot of ballistol about every 5 years. My safes have mechanical locks so no worries with electronics.

I have an AMSEC and have never lubed it or felt the need to do so.

Is yours inside your home in stable conditions?

It's in my bedroom.

Never had to lube my Browning safe in 28 years. It opens as easy now as when I got it.

Have never lubed my Amsec safe, been just fine for 32 years.

While I've never serviced a gun safe I've serviced cash acceptor safes for 10 years.

The American Security website states a solenoid is used to allow the safe to open, I suspect it's similar to what is used in the safes I serviced.

If the click sound is normal I would think the solenoid is fine.

If you're able to turn the handle but it feels like it's dragging but still opens there is most likely a problem with the linkage or a maybe a door alignment problem.

I've serviced safes that had door alignment problems mostly caused by rust, I used WD40. I have had to adjust the linkage on rare occasions for the safe doors to open smoothly.

I don't recall ever seeing rust on the linkage but I'm sure I've used WD40 or a lubricating oil on the linkage also.

Is there any play in the handle if you try and turn it without trying to open the safe? if so has the feeling in the handle changed over time(basically any slop in the handle)?

When you get the safe door open can you lock the door with it open and open it again? If so is the resistance you get when you open the door feel the same as when the door is shut when you open it?

This may sound stupid but when you open the door is there anything on the inner edges of the door and the door frame work that could be sticking causing any resistance, such as tape or paper? I've had several calls where the doors wouldn't open or were hard to open because of small amount of debris and even pens jammed in the bottom of the doors.

This is just off the top of my head.

Sorry for the rambling. I haven't worked on them for a couple of years. I had to go through my 65 year old memory bank looking for solutions to the problem with your safe.

Anything behind your panel that is raw metal on raw metal needs grease. The plating on any boltwork should be self lubricating, but sometimes whether on metal or even plastic bushings could use a small amount of light lubrication. I prefer Tri-Flow with teflon.

Stay away from the lock.

I bought a Winchester safe 15 or so years ago. The handle always seemed to drag a little when you opened the door. One day just for the hell of it, I shot a little Ballistol on the plastic bushings where the pins come through the door. Made a world of difference I’ve probably done it 2 or 3 times since I’ve had it.
