“California's liberal governor Gavin Newsom has asked the Supreme Court to help him solve the state's homeless crisis by allowing him to ban rough sleeping. Justices agreed on Friday to consider whether a lower court was wrong to rule that a ban on homeless people in public places was unconstitutional. It comes after the [nut cake] 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals declared that anti-camping ordinances in San Francisco, violate the Eighth Amendment ban on 'cruel and unusual punishment'. Newsom has repeatedly promised to 'own the issue' as the city faces an exodus of businesses from a city blighted by drug use, and has urged the nation's top court not to 'tie his hands'. 'California has invested billions to address homelessness, but rulings from the bench have tied the hands of state and local governments to address this issue,' he said on Friday. 'The Supreme Court can now correct course and end the costly delays from lawsuits that have plagued our efforts to clear encampments and deliver services to those in DailyMail article: https://mol.im/a/12958763 Serious about crackers

What's funny is if you decide to just go into one of the most popular campsites in, say, Yosemite or Lake Tahoe area, and pitch your tent w/o a reservation, you'll be swiftly and unceremoniously removed and nobody would give two effs about that 9th Circus decision.

IMO, he is not running in 2024, but most likely in 2028. But as far as his attempt to quell the homeless issue, it is his base, not conservatives he is trying cater to. Even Democrat voters are extremely sick and tired of the huge mess of the homeless and crime in their cities, specifically Frisco and Los Angeles.

I would assume his goal isn't to end "rough sleeping" in and of itself, but rather to force the state to build and or provide housing for everyone. Naturally do it on the taxpayer's dime, maybe even in their homes.

Yep. The Republicans have already mostly moved out of those areas. As they chase away upper and middle income people all they are left with is "the huge mess of the homeless and crime in their cities". Good luck supporting your bloated government... San Francisco spends about $90k/year per homeless person. That's right. They could scrap the feel good bullshit programs and cut aid to the homeless industrial complex groups run by the wives and relatives of politicians and just cut checks to every bum on the street. It's enough money to move to a less expensive city, like where the bums are actually from, get an apartment and food, and smoke dope all day. No job required. At least then those of us who work wouldn't have to play hopscotch through an obstacle course of sprawled out bodies, tweaker junk, needles, and poop.

As of 2023, the average salary in the USA, according to Forbes, is $59,428 and the median household income in the US was $70,784 in 2021. Yes, I realize San Francisco is an expensive place to live but a whole lot of people who actually work to support themselves get by on a lot less. "Some things are apparent. I don’t know if it’s that or if they are becoming smarter. Like it or not, many libs are learning that ramming through lefty policies isn’t working for them. They are learning from Governor's like Andy Beshear that if you can be popular on kitchen table topics, you can draw the conservative vote, and enact lefty policies by controlling state government with little push back from conservatives because you’re doing “a good job on other things”. Beshear is evil. Right now, his administrative office of the courts is no-bailing offenders with warrants, circumventing court orders. Not a word is being said about it. Other governors ram it through by legislation and they get legal and public push back. As an example.

It's not against the law to be homeless, and to forcibly tell someone they can't be homeless in a pubic place, runs into the 8th A problem. In Orange County the City of Anaheim had a huge homeless problem along the Santa Ana River with the common issues of crime, drugs, needles, Hep A and shit everywhere. Anaheim wanted to pass an ordinance making it illegal to camp there and Federal Judge Carter said you can't declare them to be illegally camping with a message to move along to another city who has a similar no camping ordinance e.g., they'd be a criminal just by relocating. Carter ruled that cities need to have alternate places where they can live before moving them and for the the most part, private and public funds were used to mostly accomplish that. There's still a homeless problem but now they are in approved areas, resources are available and now if they misbehave, the law has more teeth. Newsom knows this but it makes him look good to the public.

Newsom is a narcisstic self centered individual. His little trip to the French Laundry during the COVID lockdown is a good example. Please stay in California.

No they are not. If they were they'd never have ended up where they are now. Stupid people are stupid for a reason, it's their job. Same thing for evil people, they do evil because it's their job. Evil people remain evil, and stupid people remain stupid, regardless of anything else that changes otherwise. Good lord how complicated does this need to be. Lover of the US Constitution Wile E.
