Thief caught on camera bursting into flames while trying to steal gas in Utah amid record price surge Login/Join

He really paid a high price for gas.

A Utah thief desperate to get ever-pricier gas was caught on camera drilling into a truck’s tank — then partially bursting into flames.

Shocking footage obtained by KSL TV first showed a white pickup pulling up next to a truck in the parking lot of — ironically — a fire protection company.

“The guy tried to siphon gas out of it and he wasn’t getting the siphon to work,” fed-up Summit Fire and Protection branch manager Travis Mills told the outlet.

“So he decided to drill the gas tank … and that’s when he caught on fire,” he said of the Saturday morning blaze.

The dramatic footage showed the unidentified thief under the rear of the truck — then suddenly jumping up and running away with his T-shirt ablaze.

He then fell to the ground and rolled across the parking lot, before his accomplice in the pickup helped him to get back in.

It was not clear how injured the thief was, or if he was ever identified or found. However, Mills stressed that the raider was lucky the truck was close to empty at the time.

“If there were more gas in it than a gallon, this thing would have absolutely turned into a bomb,” the manager told KSL.

“It’s sad because times are tough for a lot of people, but it’s not worth the $5 that he would have saved for the injury that the guy sustained.”

Mills said the same truck had already had its catalytic converter stolen — and had previously been targeted by gas thieves, forcing them to upgrade to a $30,000 security system that caught the thief in the act.

fed-up Summit Fire and Protection branch manager Travis Mills told the outlet.

A Salt Lake City fire marshall division chief, Tony Allred, said the crime was part of an alarming trend fueled by gas prices soaring to record highs.

“Unfortunately, given the gas prices in the valley and nationwide, we are seeing an increase in gas theft,” Allred told the outlet.

What do you think? Post a comment.
Still, he stressed that “drilling into a tank is extraordinarily dangerous.”

“It’s just extraordinarily dangerous for the person stealing the gas for a very low return,” Allred said of the crazy, caught-on-camera crime.

I hope he stole enough gas to last the rest of his life.

Video unclear, but I am pretty sure the pickup did not have a Florida license tag.

Retroactive birth control.

Unfortunately, Bozo will eventually turn up at a hospital, run up a huge bill at public expense, maybe go to a burn unit for extended care or reconstructive procedures (also at public expense), then retire on Social Security Disability benefits and Medicaid.

His partner in the truck, instead of being prosecuted as a co-conspirator, will be hailed as a hero.

The law firm of Dewey, Cheatum, and Howe are proceeding with a personal injury lawsuit against the company for leaving a truck where their client was enticed to commit his trespass, vandalism, and attempted theft, no safeguards in place to protect the public from such horrendous dangers posed by their nuisance conditions.

Hedley Lamarr: Wait, wait, wait. I'm unarmed.
Bart: Alright, we'll settle this like men, with our fists.
Hedley Lamarr: Sorry, I just remembered . . . I am armed.

It will only get better - more self-immolation events while stealing fuel.

Anyone here remember the days before locking fuel caps? And when they became standard? The one you needed a key to unlock to refuel the car/truck/bike?

All that is missing from that nostalgia is Odd/Even and 45+ minute around the block fuel lines. Oh, and that windfall profits fuel tax on the evil petro industry.

It only stands to reason that where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting the sacrificial offerings. Where there's service, there is someone being served. The man who speaks to you of sacrifice is speaking of slaves and masters, and intends to be the master.

No, this is Utah. The news will interview an Officer who will deadpan with "sometimes people make bad decisions".

I see that they used black tape to cover the license plate numbers. However he left his shirt, so there will be plenty of DNA evidence if they felt like pursuing this.

New fuel tank inc. installation will cost $1500 at least, I suspect.

I bet there's one or two in here old enough to remember Stop, Drop, and Roll Dick, roll. Dick Van Dyke was the first thing I thought of.

Couple more gallons in the tank might have puddled enough to catch the pickup on fire. Driving off with the RR tire on fire would have REALLY been funny.

Fire prevention company. "I guess irony can be, pretty ironic sometimes."

What pisses me off the most about people like this is not that he's going steal $30-$60 worth of gas, it's that he's going to cost hundreds to thousands of dollars in damage to do it. (or in the case with the possibility of losing the truck and it's contents, $40k-$70k) I hope he suffers a while then dies.

I hope he suffers a bunch, and I don't care as long as he keep suffering. I don't wish him death as long as he suffers more. Ya can't suffer after you die. So he can live on to suffer more.
