Cool Pic of a 1911 From the National Museum of the Mighty Eighth Air Force
I went to the museum in Savannah, GA today. It was pretty nice. I got there about noon and it was pretty crowded, all ages, so I thought that was good. Spent a few hours wandering around. Cool seeing an actual B17 in person.

One section is called “Mighty 8th Air force Aces” (there were a lot of them) and it had some of their pictures on the wall. The picture of Col David C. Schilling caught my eye because of the pistol he was holding. Looks like a 1911A1 with three magazines welded together and a front grip pinned or welded onto the dustcover.

Hard to tell but it looks like there is some type of tab or lever right underneath the slide lock.

Col Schilling had 22.5 confirmed air kills and 10.5 confirmed ground kills.

Hope everyone has a peaceful Memorial Day weekend.

Looks similar to a Colt prototype Swartz conversion, which converted a 1911 into a full auto carbine.

There was a bunch of cool exhibits but when I saw the F4 I thought of Sigmonkey. So here are some crappy pics.

I have some other good pics I'll try to roll in tomorrow.

My father had a 1911 when he was flying B17's in the Mighty 8th. He brought it all the way back to the States and gave it up in the States during discharge, he regretted not keeping it. So do I.

This is by far my favorite aircraft. I was an Aircraft Electrician on the C/D/E models in the Air Force at Spangdahlem AB Germany (76' - 78')
Thanks for posting it.

The Eighth Air Force is special.

They lost 26,000 men. It's awesome that you run their flag.

I run the flag of my tank battalion. Always and forever.

It is a great museum and a great place to visit if you are near Savannah.

downtown,

If you want anything from the museum let me know.

I'll be down here at Stewart until late June.

This is what I do.

I was there well over a decade ago and they had an unrestored ME163 inside by the entrance.
One of the guides was a vet that had flown on a B17.

Cool 1911. Seems to be a NFA violation in that configuration in the picture… I recall reading that some gangsters in the 1930’s had a gunsmith that would make fore grips and also convert some to full auto. That magazine is wild. Reminds me of the Remington 8 extended mags lawmen would use.

the plaque immediately after the last F4 picture has a typo in it...
