Signed up at Experian, checked my report and score. But mainly to put a credit freeze. No problems.

Then, tried to sign up with Equifax. Nope, not gonna work, unless you agree to pay a monthly fee. Same thing with TransUnion.

As I understand it, these are the Big Three of credit reporting, and I don't see one as better than the other two. Why is one free of charge, and the other two want to pick your pocket?

Neither Equifax nor TransUnion charge for a credit reporting freezes. Or at least they didn't when I froze my credit reporting with them.

They are. None are better than the others, but, any one of the three may be used by a particular entity wishing to check your credit, thus you have to freeze at all three to be certain.

I've got free reports from all three, as recently as mid-August. Unfortunately I couldn't find the right URLs for Equifax or Transunion when I went to update them yesterday. I'm sure somebody will be along with the right URLs.

Some financial institutions will now offer you free access.

Found out interesting thing about Equifax and TransUnion. If you just try to directly sign up with them, they will ask for the money. But, you have to look around on their sites for the Fraud Alert and Credit Freeze, then go through there to make an account, then no problem. So, got all three done now.

Just because you can,
doesn't mean you should

I believe Federal law requires them to give you a free report once a year.
Clark Howard, a local that was on the radio here for years, is a straight up guy when it comes to info about the subject of consumer issues. He says to check once a year using a different one every 4 months so they are free. The info they have is presented slightly different but is essentially the same.

My memory says this is the legit site for reports:

www.annualcreditreport.com

For Clarks page and info:

Absolutely true, I came to tell you that but now you know. They really push hard to get you to sign up for "monitoring" when all you really need to do is freeze your credit, then "thaw" for a short time when applying for credit. It helps to have set up a non-paying account before, makes it very quick.

I've had issues with Equifax - was harder to sign up to freeze credit (but can't remember the issue); the other two were easy and smooth.

The other issue with Equifax, I'm finding, is that they send me all kinds of junk emails and I can't opt out. The other two are quiet.

I'm glad you got it sorted out. I recently had to sign up with Equifax and TransUnion to put a credit freeze as I was alerted my SSN and DOB was part of the data breach at pbinfo.com. I've tried contacting pbinfo but no reply.

For my wife and I, I pull our credit reports on a rotating basis every 4 months from each of the three reporting agencies. I get mine from one agency and hers from another. I started this routine when they would only give you one free report from each agency once a year. I know during covid, they allowed you to pull a report every week but that ends in Dec 2023.

I go through AnnualCreditReport.com
As part of the verification process, I keep a record of the addresses I've lived at as those are one of the questions that come up.

We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual."
