Looking for input on hard tonneau covers on which a rack can be mounted. A roof top tent will be getting installed eventually and my current Extang Trifecta will not work.
Our long term plans will be to purchase a small off road trailer (for traveling) and mount it on that but the wife and I want to start camping soon to start taking the grandkids.
Vehicle is a 2019 Ram 1500 Big Horn crew cab.

What about a rolling cover? I think some like the Rollnlock leave the space to put rack in and not interfere with the cover. There are ones that roll up inside the bed but you loose about a foot of space to accommodate the rolled up cover.

I have been looking for a rack to store bikes on that mounts over the cover. I also want the option to roll up the cover under the rack to access the entire bed. I have a rolling Bakflip R2 cover and I have yet to find anything that allows the space to accommodate for the rolling cover. Most racks are so close to the cover you can't open them or you have to with something like a ladder rack.

For something like that, I would suggest looking into a bed tent or a rooftop tent. A search will yeild photo examples.

Most bed covers aren't rated for the weight you would have.

We are getting a roof top tent. That is the reason I am looking for a cover that I can add racks to support the tent.

We have tried traditional roof top tents which require you to remove a heavy cover then flip it over. Then you repeat the process when packing up. It takes about 10-15 minutes each time. The Roofnest takes about 3 minutes..
Many of these hard shell tents cost over $4000. But these are considerably less and very comfortable.

This is my old Nismo. The Pelican case was stuffed full of camping gear. My mountain bike was on the passenger side. And there was a basket all the way on the back end for firewood, etc. It was a Leer tonneau cover, as I recall. It came with tracks to attach a Thule rack system. This was back in ~2010.

I never felt the load was too much for it. However, the gas lift couldn't come close to holding it open. I needed up keeping a stick of 1" conduit with plastic caps in the bed to prop it up. I also had to take the bike off to open it, as the bike would hit the rear window.

You’ll likely be most happy with a Pace Edwards Ultragroove with the built in rail expansion system.
Much more strength than actually mounting to the tonneau cover itself.
