comet24Most situations yes.
I have one friend I would be comfortable asking to stay there for a weekend and I did this a few years ago. The friend was going through some rough stuff and I said I'm going to come down and we can hang out for the weekend. This was someone who wouldn't ask for help or anything but you can tell when someone you know well could use some help.
So while mostly I would say no there are a few times when I would say it's ok. You just need to know the saturation.

slabsides45Rude to invite yourself. OTOH, if you're really good friends, calling them up to say "Hey, we are thinking about coming to town for a weekend getaway, we should plan to get together" is a non-mooch general statement. What follows may be:
a) oh, you're coming? When? Where are you staying? You don't know? Oh, then stay with us!
b) oh, you're coming? When? Where are you staying? You don't know? Oh, well when you figure it out, let me know and we can meet somewhere close to there....
Then, you never asked to stay, and you'll still see them either way.
