From what I understood... I was supposed to have my tax stuff by Jan 20th... Well, I don't. Here I am, a honest, tax paying American fucking citizen, who is willing to pay my FAIR SHARE (as much as the commies want to increase that) but I really can't... Since I'm a tax payer, and not a leech on society, I work 3 different jobs. I have my W-2 from my primary job, but NOT my other 2 jobs.... That would be WAAAYYYYY to easy... So since I called 3 weeks ago to set up my tax appointment with my accountant (because a dumb ass cop like me cant possibly be trusted to figure out a spreadsheet and taxes) and I could take today, or the left over appointments in May, I chose the 28th... Well fuck me.... I don't have the information i need from the feds.... If I"m late with my check to them, I[m a criminal, If they don't' care and I don't get the documents I need, then I need to just shut up and realize I'm taking their side and not being "xenophobic" and enabling "construction centric" employees of the federal government. Holy shit, I'm actually trying to pay my taxes and can't do so... No wonder why i understand why some folks what to head to the woods with a rifle.... Strive to live your life so when you wake up in the morning and your feet hit the floor, the devil says "Oh crap, he's up."

The “drop-dead” date for an employer to give you your W-2 is January 31, not January 20. If January 31 falls on a Saturday, Sunday, or holiday, the due date is extended to the next business day. הרחפת שלי מלאה בצלופחים

As I understand it that is a postmarked by date also. So, it might arrive after that date via mail.

"Give" is thought of by being mailed or posted online, W2's & 1099's must be "Given" by Jan 31. Many large company's only get them to the mail room by Jan 31. I have never heard of a company being penalized by IRS for late W2's or 1099's. The problem I have as a CPA is getting 1098T's, HSA 1099-SA's & 5498-SA's. __________________________________________________ If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit! As you now know, someone gave you a very bad deadline, or you imagined it.
P.S. - none of this comes "from the feds", it all comes from the folks who pay you during the year. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02

For real? |
We got a note from payroll that our W2s are delayed because the printer isn't working and they ordered a new printer. WTF? Not minority enough!

No, 1099 MISC for most items are due 01/31. 1099-B's, 1099-S, Box 8 & Box 14 1099 Misc are due 02/15. See IRS Pub 509 Page 3 __________________________________________________ If you can't dazzle them with brilliance, baffle them with bullshit! Sigs Owned - A Bunch

Buy a copy of Turbo Tax. "Some things are apparent. Where government moves in, community retreats, civil society disintegrates and our ability to control our own destiny atrophies. The result is: families under siege; war in the streets; unapologetic expropriation of property; the precipitous decline of the rule of law; the rapid rise of corruption; the loss of civility and the triumph of deceit. The result is a debased, debauched culture which finds moral depravity entertaining and virtue contemptible." -- Justice Janice Rogers Brown "The United States government is the largest criminal enterprise on earth." -rduckwor

I have found that some places (such as Fidelity), and some employer/pension providers, allow you to download a PDF of your forms. They are often available online 10 days or so before you receive the paper copy in the mail. I e-filed our federal and state taxes last Friday (the 26th), and got at acceptance notice from the IRS the same day. When in doubt, mumble

Sorry, but not having the W2s is the fault of your employers, not the feds. It's a fed form, but generated by the employer. So you're mad at the wrong entity. Further, the deadline hasn't passed yet, so you have no reason to be angry at them either. I too am a "dumb cop," but do my own taxes, using the H&R Block software. Unless you have an extremly unusual tax situation, there is no need to use an accountant. Also, I hope you're not using one that specializes in having cops as clients. In my experience, many of them encourage deductions that are actually illegal. Guess who is responsible if the IRS audits you, and discovers the bad deductions? You, not the accountant, or other tax preparer. This message has been edited. My company had our w2 in the payroll system almost 2 weeks ago. HR sent an email saying they put paper copies in the mail last week. What kills me is my brokerage account they wait until the bloody end of time. I like to get my package to my cpa as early as possible as he fills up and always gets it done by 4/15 but sooner you get in the sooner he gets it done. I have many many clients who have so many complicated partnerships they don’t all their K1 until September and don’t file their personal 1040 until October. Doing a mortgage in the fall with nearly 2 year old data is a PITA

Yup. You're a cop, you can tell if someone is following directions so you should be able to do your own taxes with no problem. What helps is having a checklist of the documents you need. The best way for me was to create the list as I was doing my taxes. I did that a long time ago and just carry it over. When I switched from having paper hard copies to having electronic copies of everything, it made things even easier as me naming the file automatically sorts them. It save me the 2 hours of sorting paper documents I had to do before. "It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." I missed this earlier. If TurboTax is working for you, I'm glad. Hower, I've tried it a few times over the years, most recently in 2017, for tax year 2016, and did not think it was as "user friendly" as the H&R Block software. Just my 2 cents, "YMMV." ___________________________________________ "He was never hindered by any dogma, except the Constitution." - Ty Ross speaking of his grandfather General Barry Goldwater "War is the remedy that our enemies have chosen, and I say let us give them all they want." - William Tecumseh Sherman

Just for the hell of it |
I had the opposite experience but had been using TurboTax for years so it may be I was used to how their programs worked. Two years ago I tried H&R Block when Turbo Tax changed their pricing. Didn't like the interface but likely was simply because I was so used to a different program. _____________________________________ Because in the end, you won’t remember the time you spent working in the office or mowing your lawn. Are you thinking the W-2 comes from the feds? It comes from your employer. I'm a CPA and do taxes. Don't use that tax preparer if they penalize you for not having your W-2. There are lots of versions of Forms 1099. I think the only one due Jan 31 is 1099-MISC (like for non employee compensation). The forms that report interest and dividends are due sometime in Feb. Broker statements come in Feb and often get corrected once or twice - I don't trust them until mid-march. Any return preparer worth their salt knows this sort of thing. Your preparer can collect your other data, add the missing W-2s when they come, and get the returns to you. Speak softly and carry a

if you have a simple return (minimal itemized deductions and no complex investments) consider the suggestions for turbo tax or tax cut. no idea what you mean when you say a cop can't be trusted with a spreadsheet - I understand you're probably venting. Doing your own taxes is not that hard. Hey, if you're concerned, drop me an email and I'll send you my phone number. We can talk through this... in 5 min you'll know if you can handle turbo tax (or tax cut). My guess is you can. (The offer for a short discussion is limited to KevinCW. I have limited time know that busy season has started.) Speak softly and carry a

I have gotten only two 1099s thus far. They slowly trickle in over time. I would not be too concerned. On a related note, the IRS stated they are now a year behind because of the shutdown. The picture of sloth IMHO.

I am a true believer in the Biblical tax system as instituted by Jesus: Matthew 20:21 “Render therefore unto Cesar, the things which are Cesar's: and unto God, the things that are God's.” If I ever receive a tax bill from Cesar, then I will pay it in full. Otherwise: piss off. . “Leave the Artillerymen alone, they are an obstinate lot. . .” – Napoleon Bonaparte http://poundsstudio.com/
