Depending on your layout...I would almost want a fenced enclosure at your entrances. They do that up north so a bear don't surpise you coming out. It won't stop them...just give you time to get back inside.
I'd almost want to stick an arm out the door and let loose with an air horn before leaving. But your neighbors will probably hate you.
