Apple has pushed down another update, 16.4 today. New security, emogi's, etc.

Thank the Good Lord, new emoji's.

I'm just curious about the use of the phrase 'pushed down'. Is that the way Apple refers to updates?

When I hear that phrase I'm reminded of what happens about a half hour after I finish my morning coffee.

I really have no idea what the OP said. Does he mean a new update has been launched or...?

Apple has a method of pushing security updates, but typical iOS updates are pull from the client side (setting you iPhone to automatic updates).

Yeah. Keeps Tim Cook occupied so he doesn’t have as much time to make queer degradations to macOS. I’m still using Mojave. Beginning with the next macOS, Catalina, many standard unix tools were lost. The emacs text editor for example.

But vi is still there. and is the only editor available when you boot to single user mode (well, there is also ed, but).
 
Last year about this time, I was still running Mojave on laptop and desktop. Then I bought one of those new Apple silicon M1Pro MBPros, which came installed with Monterey (and you cannot go backwards). To keep things in sync, I upgraded my Intel Mini to Monterey as well. I was able to configure Monterey pretty much like my old Mojave install. Doing the same thing this year, about to replace my 2018 Intel Mini with a new M2Pro mini, which comes with Ventura. I am not happy with a few of the changes in Ventura, but all in all, I feel right at home once I changed things around to my liking. Migration Assistant helps a lot. And yes, you can migrate an Intel install to an AS install, to keep all of your settings intact.

It means a new update is available and ready to be downloaded and installed. I didn't think this simple message would cause any confusion.

I am not sure why this "news" is relevant to this forum. If you have an iPhone, you will automagically see the update on your phone. If you don't, it has no value.

Well yeah. You'll automatically get the upgrade. But there are a lot of things in the update other than more emojis. Don't care? that's fine. Me I like to know what exactly has changed.

You’ll automatically get the update if your phone is configured that way. Some of us allow updates when we’re ready for them, and Apple can “Remind me later” otherwise.

That sucks about no standard Unix tools in Catalina on. I get too much done in terminal windows to go for that. I don’t use mhe anymore, but no emacs is a dealbreaker.

I preferred vi when I was a software developer in the UNIX environment.

I adjusted settings to only allow updates for security aspects

All other updates I have to initiate. No issues with the new 16.4

GNU Emacs for the Mac is available as a .dmg file. It is also a universal binary, meaning it installs natively on Intel and Silicon Macs.

Besides emacs I know of two other unix tools that were broken, although admittedly present.

ccrypt – a file/directory encryption/decryption tool that I like.

rcsdiff – one of the suite of RCS (revision control system) tools.

All three of these tools have been in macOS since it was known as osx, and all worked while Steve Jobs was alive.

All three tools are now present and working on my newer MacBook, running Big Sur, thanks to the Homebrew package manager. The Homebrew folks ask for donations and are worthy. I hope Apple donates. The Homebrew folks are carrying Apple’s water.

Settings --> General --> Software Updates.

Yes, remember the “renewable energy” charging times in the last update, an arbitrary time guess to allow your phone only to charge when your power company is most likely to be generating wind or solar power.

I guess that’s better than having it pushed in.
