After 20 years of buying and selling crap on various forums I think I finally got scammed. I guess I thought it would never happen to me cuz I've had such a good run with honest and dependable fellow firearms enthusiasts over the years. I sent pay pal (friend and family) to a guy for an optic who hasn't returned my countless emails to him. No correspondence or anything since the day the funds were sent. It's been over a week and nothing. Is this worth filing a report? All I have is email address In which he collected the funds and a name (alias?). Damn I hate a thief. Just for the record .... it was from another site.

Since you sent it friends and family I doubt they will do anything.

Friends and family is not for buying items and so PayPal does not get their cut, so they don't offer protection. You knowingly deceived them to save 3% (I have done the same on multiple occasions so I am not trying to be a dick towards you) so why would they help you? I would not.

When I have done F&F it is honestly for a friend and not an item, or it is someone on here who has a legitimate post count who I trust to honor the agreement. Otherwise I pay the fee.

Next time I would suggest paying the 3% fee for the protection if it is someone you don't know.

And PP is "firearm/ammo unfriendly" for certain items, as well as "not limited too..." as a cover for who knows what.

Likely the best that will happen is they decline to process your request, and worst, they close your account.

That sucks. At least report the thief's account to the mods at whatever site so they ban him.

As far as PayPal is concerned, when you send someone something as a "gift," it means exactly that--you gave them them money as a gift, and not in exchange for anything else.

You are pretty much screwed with Paypal since you used friend and family. I doubt they will do anything to the buyer and might do something to your account for using F&F for a sale.

I would report it to the forum mods though.

Did you use a credit card to send it PayPal? If so, you may be able to file a claim with your credit card company. The only issue is that PayPal will not end up being out the money when the dust settles, so if they don’t collect it back from the scammer, they’ll come back to you and get it from you.

Unless you know the person personally, NEVER EVER EVER send a family and friends gift for an purchase. Scammers lean on people to do this because there is no recourse.

Well, not that it helps you now, but never, ever, ever, ever, ever use friends and family for someone who isn't. It always surprises me to hear that people still do that.

"The people hate the lizards and the lizards rule the people."
"Odd," said Arthur, "I thought you said it was a democracy."
"I did," said Ford, "it is."
"So," said Arthur, hoping he wasn't sounding ridiculously obtuse, "why don't the people get rid of the lizards?"
"It honestly doesn't occur to them. They've all got the vote, so they all pretty much assume that the government they've voted in more or less approximates the government they want."
"You mean they actually vote for the lizards."
"Oh yes," said Ford with a shrug, "of course."
"But," said Arthur, going for the big one again, "why?"
"Because if they didn't vote for a lizard, then the wrong lizard might get in."
