general consensus is that they were PVC conduit for fiber optic cables.

Look like the rolls you see when they are putting message boards on freeway. Then they run cable thru them.

The latest report indicated they were in fact DOT spools and that the state had asked them repeatedly not to store them under the bridge. Report also said possible traffic accident caused the fire to start.

I had heard it was due to some kind of vehicle accident, but that looks like it started in a fenced in storage area, perhaps homeless person in there started a fire to keep warm and it got out of hand or someone started it on purpose.

The "first picture", almost looks as if that cop could have put it out with an extinguisher.

That is a lot of burning PVC, and I'm guessing there is more under there as well. Plastics burn dirty but that fire is hot enough that there is reburn; the chemical and particulate byproducts of the initial combustion are mixing with sufficient oxygen and heat and igniting again intensifying the fire and the BTU load on that bridge.

As someone else noted under intense heat concrete becomes brittle and will spall due to uneven heating and the rapid expansion of moisture in the concrete. Couple that with re-bar expanding and twisting under that heat load and it is only a matter of time before it fails.

Dealt with my lunchtime commute today and that was fun.

From Little 5 Points, I had to zig and zig and take every damn back street up Briarcliff, through Druid Hills and north, then east for a minute, then south again, then back west on Lavista, and finally straight into the area where the collapse was. Managed to get onto 400nb a few hundred feet from he collapse and then gun it north.

Nightmare.

Average speed today was 6 mph. So, let's say my hour lunch break was slightly extended.

The people of Atlanta will be hating this for a while. It's amazing, the only thing that seems to mess us up as much as this fire over cooking the highway is ice.

Got there quickly but water was doing nothing to the fire. Had to bring up the foam stuff from the airport to finally put it out. 30-45 minutes
