Screen resolution: TV vs Media
Pardon my ignorance might have missed the Memo.

Why is it that 20+ years later, TV manufacturers and Media haven’t figured a Wide screen format that completely fills the screen?

Must have seen my first wide screen TV set in Europe in 2000 and there where black unused bands above and below the screen image.

1080p versus UHD and still half my screet is being ignored. Haven’t seen a 4k film yet.

Because Hollywood has never settled on a format, and they never will. No matter what TV you have, the only way to get rid of any black bars is to zoom in a lose part of the picture.

The "made for TV" movies and series for Netflix and such these days are 16×9 format. Huge improvement over the 4x3 TVs of old. Movies made for the theater use 2 or 3 different aspect ratios (1.85:1 , 2.35:1), but all are wider than current TVs, thus the black bars on top and bottom.

Hollywood is holding onto one of it's last advantages to try and get you to see movies at the theater, and see movies on the BIG screen.

I have a few SIGs.

somehow I ended up with a setting for a while on my old TV that made everyone look tall and skinny. I forgot what I did to get that setting, but happened mostly with older movies. but I felt ok with it because it used my entire screen.

Agree. But what’s great is the IMAX scenes translate really well to large panels (65/75/85 inches and projector screens even larger). Hollywood can stick a fork in it. Here it’s like $20 for a film and you have to put up with countless dipshits who can’t put their phones away even though they paid to be a in dark theater, with dark colored carpet, walls, etc. If the cineplex chains would have heavily enforced the no phone bullshit they might have had a chance. I’ll take HT for $1000 Alex!
