Best Hawaiian shirt?
My brother was a huge help to me when I was sick a while back.
He mentioned he hadn't bought one in several years. I want to give him a good
quality shirt. Price doesn't matter. I know nothing about quality clothes.
Any suggestions?

IMO, Reyn Spooner is worth a look for a high-quality Aloha shirt. I bought one a few years back on Oahu and have ordered more since.

I have a couple Tommy Bahama that I like. But my favorites are 2 from Hilo Hattie that I got in Hawaii some moons ago. They are 100% silk and well made. Unfortunately they don't seem to make those anymore, the ones on the site now are Modal and/or Rayon blends of some sort. Might be possible to find the silk ones on ebay or something.

Like holsters, there's numerous, small boutique brands out there doing really good high-end work. Just know what materials your buddy likes since Hawaiian shirts usually come in silk, rayon, poly/rayon, linen (cotton) or, a combination.

On those Reyn Spooner shirts, how's the sizing? I'm normally a 42 jacket and wear a large in other Hawaiian shirts like Tommy Bahama. I was looking at reviews and they say they run large. Should I go for a medium? I don't want a taylored one, just the normal button front.

I wear a size 42 coat. I recently ordered some new Reyn Spooner shirts to replace ones I had worn out while living in Hawaii. I have the large size, and it's not a narrow cut, but a normal cut.
So I recommend you order a large size, and see how it fits.
My wife bought me some Cooke Street shirts at Costco, but I don't like them.
Reyn Spooner all the way!

Aloha!

We lived in Hawaii for 20 years, and I started buying Reyn Spooner shirts probably 25 years ago. They are all made of their trademark Spooner Kloth which is a cotton/poly blend. I don't have any 100% cotton ones. I will say the quality has changed a bit recently, but I don't know if it's for all of their shirts. The tags on my earliest ones read "Designed in Hawaii. Tailored in Hawaii." The tags on the ones from maybe 15 years ago read "Designed in Hawaii. Tailored in Korea." The Spooner Kloth for those are 60% cotton/40% polyester. I happened to order a new shirt this year directly from Reyn Spooner. It's the same classic cut Spooner Kloth series, but it's "Designed in Hawaii. Tailored in China." It seems like a good quality shirt, but the cloth is now 55% cotton/45% polyester. It seems thinner. My older shirts still look new after many years, so hopefully the newer one holds up as well, but I was pretty disappointed in the change. I couldn't tell any differences between the Hawaii made and Korea made shirts. I didn't even know where they were made. I had bought them all from a Reyn Spooner shop in Honolulu. After I received the new one this year, I decided to look at the tags since it just felt different.

I’ve been wearing a few Johari West shirts. Says they are made in Indonesia, seem to be good quality, low to mid $30’s.
