We have several smoke alarms in our house, hard wired. We replace the batteries twice a year but have one that has consistently given us a problem. We've been in the house 15 years, the house is 19 years old. My questions: Replace only the one detector? Reading up on detectors, recommended that they be replaced every 10 years. Would you, have you? We won't replace them ourselves, I'm too old to be on top of a ladder, working with our 12 foot ceilings!

I would replace them all, and did all of mine recently. House built in 2005. I choose replacements that use AA batteries instead of the 9V as back up power. They seem to last longer, and are much less costly to replace.

If I was planning on staying in the property for much longer I'd probably replace them all. Otherwise, just the troublesome one and test the others.

I had a couple that kept chirping in our prior house after about seven years. We went ahead and replaced them all just to avoid the O200 wake up call. Not sure you need to replace the batteries every six months for ones that are hardwired. Those batteries are only being drawn on in power outages. Of course they do lose power with age, but I have typically gone 2 to 4 years before replacing. You only have integrity once. - imprezaguy02
