Has anyone had a joint replacement in a toe?

I’m scheduled to have the joint replaced on the big toe on my right foot this week. Currently it’s frozen with arthritis, hopefully it will allow it to move again and cut some of the pain.

My ex had a big toe done about 10 years ago, she has been happy with it.

There was some pain and ambulatory healing time that took about 6 weeks total. Crutches, and some short term pain when first walking again.

I had not heard of this. I do know that turf toe in the NFL is a very bad injury. Nobody walks or runs without toes. Wishing you a speed recovery

It’s in my future. First doc said shave down the bone or fuse with fusion limiting some mobility. Second said replace the joint or fuse with fusion not limiting mobility. Not at a decision point yet but getting contradictory advice isn’t great. I’m not 50 until the spring.

I had it done when I was 38.

It was totally numb for a year or so. I can still feel the replacement joint in there 20 years later.

It's better than what it was before though.

I had/have Halux Rigidus in my right big toe. My toe was almost completely frozen and it started forming a large bump. I had a Cheilectomy done in 2013. For me it didn't give me much more flexibility but it did get rid of the swelling and bump.

If they end up having to use any replacement bone product, do your research first because there is one company that has had trouble using diseased bone product from cadavers. Their name used to start with an A but they’ve changed their name.

I had same. Foot Dr opened up and found a huge wedge of calcium (I believe) that had fallen into the joint and was causing it to lock up.
I originally went as I was stumbling when playing tennis. Clean up added flexibility and removed the intermittent stabbing pain I was having.

No, but I am going to have to get it done in the next 3-5 years. Real bad arthritis in the left big joe joint. There is no space between the bones in the x-ray. My daughter interned at a top Orthopedic center in Boston this past summer. She said they routinely replace the joint and the procedure has come a long way. I'll tell you what she told me. Pick someone who just does this all day.

I've already been diagnosed with it in my future. Just waiting on my pain tolerance to finally give in. Then I will have it done. Arthritis and gout in my left foot big toe.

Back home from a long day. Initially, the plan was a Metatarsal Head Resurfacing Implant, pre-op, after another set of x-rays, the surgeon and podiatry resident said the joint was too far gone for that procedure. The resident wanted to fuse the joint, which I do not want done, hell, it’s already frozen.

The podiatrist, the surgeon and I had a lengthy conversation, which the surgeon gave me two options, fusing the joint and a full replacement, removing bone on both sides of the joint. The surgeon, said, if it was his toe, he would opt for the full replacement as that would increase range of motion, the podiatrist disagreed that it was the best option. I chose the full replacement.

It’s done, I’m home, not supposed to put any weight on it for at least a week, maybe longer.

The fun has begun on the recovery process.
