GeorgeairHow about another round of Name That Tool?
Always interesting the breadth of knowledge this shows here.
In this case, not mine, but one of my company owners brought it in today to show me. Any guesses on name and use for this size?

My first guess was making tiny canoes for his pet squirrels. However with context of knowing his hobbies and recent passions I actually knew what it was for, but had no freaking clue the name.

That is interesting, but those don’t generally come in constant radius like this.

trapper189Drawknife. Could be used to debark small cedar cedar trees for fence posts, flagpoles, railings, etc. Could be used to prep wood billets for further working on a lathe. Although the bevel seems wrong for that.
A drawknife like that is for course work and wouldn’t be used for fine shaping like a spokeshave.

Can also be used to shave a large(r) radius onto a corner.

So JUST the trunks, not limbs? That’s even more specialized than it actually is.

DING DING DING Right on the money. Under an hour. Not great by SF times, but during a weekday not bad.
A link to a little more info on these in general. Not this one, which I believe may actually have been made by Barr.
Link to Barr. He did say they are made to order, he has another in queue that he expects to get mid to late next year. By made to order, that's by hand as you can see from the details.
Went to a chair making workshop in TN or KY a year or two ago. In a long weekend they went from materials to a chair, no power tools. He's super detail oriented and it really hit his buttons, he's working on another at home now.
Linky to example from England.Yep, also called inshave, plus a few other things noted at that link.

trapper189It’s an inshave, not a scorp:
“This is a specialized drawknife for hollowing out areas in bowls, chair seats, etc.“
Link That also explains why the bevel seemed off for the possible uses I posted.
I knew what a drawknife and spokeshave were, but not a scorp. Apparently, a scorp is a loop of metal with only one handle used for smaller carving than an inshave would be used for.
File this in the learned something new today.

Sig MarineSorta in my wheelhouse as I used to make handmade Windsor chairs from the log and still have 3-4 scorps in my tool chest for carving seats.
