A replacement ready to install rebuild is about $2000.
It's not rocket surgery to R&R one.
I wish you were closer and we'd do it in my garage.

vthokyThanks, SC! I haven't torn into a transmission yet, and would enjoy the learning.
I got a quote yesterday for a remanufactured one, at $2030. I'd snap it up, knowing how much she and I love our PFs.
However... she texted me this morning. She got an estimate of $3500, and decided it's time for her PF to go. We're both sad about it, frankly.
I sent her the quote I received... I can't see the labor in a remove-and-replace being $1500. Maybe the savings will be enough that she can keep her trusty PF going.

ftttuI have an '03 Toyota Tacoma double cab 4x4, and it won't shift out of gears until higher RPM when it is cold. What is the problem, and is there any remedy to this aside from getting a rebuild?

egregoreEven at a high figure of $3500 (which sounds pretty high to me), consider that this is maybe five or six payments on the equivalent new vehicle.

Shift soleniod is clogged or sticky.
Remove and clean first, then replace if that doesn't get it.
It WILL fail to let loose when it shifts and grab 2 ranges at once and turn the transmission into scrap metal.

Thanks for the heads up. I hope to take it in soon. Now, at least I have some information before I do.

Why is it sticky?
What is it clogged with?
Age and wear, they get to where they don't move straight but diagonally(though very slightly)
Varnish and clutch material(paper)collects in the solenoid screen

I wonder if it has a check engine light on.
