From the news story: "He’s not accused of firing the gun, but deputies say he rented it."

So it appears that Mr. Felon took his friend to the range, where he (illegally) rented and took possession/control of a firearm, then handed the gun off to his friend, who then used it to negligently shoot an instructor.

Felons aren't just barred from shooting guns. They can't possess them at all. Hence the resulting charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm:

quote:
It is unlawful for any person to own or to have in his or her care, custody, possession, or control any firearm, ammunition, or electric weapon or device, or to carry a concealed weapon, including a tear gas gun or chemical weapon or device, if that person has been:
(a) Convicted of a felony in the courts of this state;

Pretty much.

To be more specific a convicted felon is in trouble if he or she lives in a house where someone else has a firearm. A local guy was sent back to the state pen on such a charge. His girlfriend had purchased a revolver for her protection and not told him about it. A disgruntled neighbor phoned the local authorities since he had knowledge of the firearm and a big grudge against this guy.

Only as a guess, the bullet could have shattered his thigh bone creating a gap, splinters and muscle damage. However that’s based on M-16A1 wounds.

Sounds like something he would do. Knowing him he made sure that he had no ready access to the gun collection and technically did not possess the firearm. Liddy said lots of stupid things. Being a former FBI agent I am sure he knew the ins and outs of federal law. What a piece of work. He once claimed to have eaten a rat.

Exactly. If I'm with an inexperienced shooter I watch 'em like a hawk. If someone is really new I'll load one round for starters and see how it goes.

That's very good. I start them out with zero rounds. Multiple dry runs of picking up the gun with proper hold and muzzle direction with open chamber. Firing at a target on an emty chamber, opending the action and putting it back on the table oriented properly with an empty chamber. No bullets until they are comfortable with the gun and procedure. Then we do the same thing with one bullet etc.

One of the first classes I went to, I wore a collared tee shirt (polo shirt). Wouldn’t you know, I got a nice hot .45ACP casing trapped right up against the back of my neck. It burned badly enough to scab over that night. The left hand went to the back of my neck to remove it, but neither the feet nor the right arm moved. Finger off the trigger and on the safety spot, then don’t move anything but the support arm to deal with the brass issue. That was the last time I wore a collar on the range.

That's the very worst part, not only was he shot, but his life is forever changed from this idiot. I hope there is some way he can sue the shooter.

A horrible unlucky shot. If it hit in the bone, artery, nerve complex at the joint it is catastrophic.

I knew I taught my teenage daughter right when a hot shell went down her cleavage. She kept the gun pointing down range. Just did a little shimmy and shake with her shoulders.

Eek

Dayum!

Granted, I'm not a doctor. But I'm actually kinda surprised that, with a single 9mm FMJ gunshot to the thigh followed by prompt medical attention, amputation of the leg was deemed the best course of action.

I was more than a little confused myself; I’ve known people that had leg bones broken in several pieces and had them pinned back together in a halo. I cannot imagine what prompted a full on amputation.

Now a 10mm...

Our daughter went thru that surgery due to a head on car crash with a drunk driver, who was on the wrong side of the road. The surgery went very well and her thigh is good as new.

She is facing a hip transplant now due to long term blood circulation problems.

Somehow amputation of the guy's leg seems a little strange to me, too.

Tampa General is the only Level 1 trauma center in Tampa Bay. I lived in the area for 21 years. They have a great reputation among first responders, or at least they did when I was there. If I were shot in the Tampa Bay Area that's where I would want my helicopter to land. Of course they can make mistakes, but amputating that guy's leg would have involved a lot of really smart people trying to come up with a less drastic measure of saving his life. Don't discount the stuff that could have gone wrong during the initial emergency surgery, or the possibility that he had other serious medical issues. I am not smart enough to second guess the surgeons.
