Military plane crashed today a little south of Kirkland AFB. Reports say it was a new F35 flown by a contractor. Pilot survived. From the article: A U.S. official tells the ABC News Pentagon Bureau the plane was a new F-35 that belonged to the U.S. Marine Corps. The official says the plane was being transferred from the Lockheed factory to be put into service. The plane was flown by a defense contract management agency pilot at the time of the crash. https://www.koat.com/article/a...-new-mexico/60928738 https://twitter.com/AlexBarnic...hdRJW_3XCwzT5Tg&s=19

What a stupid tweet. "F-35...just crashed as it took off. What do you think of this?" Think of what? There are zero information, except that it crashed, to even think anything. Q

well, there's $110 million smoking hole the bright side is it frees up a parking space on the ramp for all the F35's the USAF won't accept until TR3 is completed.... 1 airplane, 3 models, 14 variants - what could possibly go wrong

Staring back from the abyss |
The military-industrial complex at work. I'd guess it costs a couple of hundred K, maybe as high as a million or two, worth of materials and legitimate labor to put one of those planes together and they slap a $110 million dollar price tag on them. Why? Because the DOD will pay it. $7000 coffee pots...$600 toilet seats.... ________________________________________________________ "Great danger lies in the notion that we can reason with evil." Well, shit! I saw that smoke plume as I was leaving work.
According to the stories, and looking at the site, it crashed while attempting to land. :: sigh :: Thanks, media. ________________________________________ -- Fear is the mind-killer. A picture taken from the airport just before the crash. Is the black object in photo the ejection seat? .

If it’s really the USMC variant that black thing is part of the vtol. I think the kicked up dust in lower left is from same. War Eagle!

You're referring to that panel-sized object where the cockpit is? Since this was a -B model, that looks like the lift-fan door. An image with an ejection, you're usually going to see the canopy getting blown-off or somewhere in the vicinity and the rocket motor exhaust of the seat firing.

Looks like contractor pilot error. Contractor is now on the hook for the plane. ____________________________ Eeewwww, don't touch it! Here, poke at it with this stick.

CBS reports it crashed while taking off: “The pilot had landed at Kirtland at about 1 p.m. local time to refuel, and had just taken off bound for Edwards AFB when the crash occurred, the Kirtland spokesperson said.” And this about the pilot: “…the pilot was able to exit the plane and was hospitalized with serious injuries. The pilot was last reported to be in stable condition at the University of New Mexico Hospital, the Kirtland spokesperson said.“ Link

An F-35 can't fly from Fort Worth to Edwards without refueling???

Sorry, I’m not gifted enough to post the pic. There is an image somewhere of the ejection. Plane is barely off the ground. I hope that pilot gets to fly again. War Eagle!

Apple maps says 1,300 miles from Fort Worth to Edwards and google says the F-35 has a range greater than 1,200nm or 1,380 miles. How much greater, I was not able to find.

Hmm. OK, 1380 vs 1300 is a pretty near thing, definitely close enough to warrant a fuel stop for safety.
