Question on 13' wide load local towing in Califrnia Login/Join

I know we have at least one CHP officer on Sigforum, hoping for an expert opinion. If towing a boat that is 13' wide, but only within city limits, are state-wide wide load permits needed? Distance would be 2 miles, no highway travel. Are there county wide load permits that could be used instead?

Can't speak for your state, but if it were me, here in Missouri, I'd just tow it the two miles. I don't think anybody would get too worked up over it. You would want to have an escort with some flashy lights to avoid any issues with oncoming traffic.

I'd be more concerned with height.

Technically it's a wide load. Average lane is 9 feet wide. If it were me, I'd just go for it during a low traffic period. But I have been known to be irresponsible. ..

These replies are just what I was hoping to hear. Make it look legal with the wide load sign, lights, and a following car. Then travel at 6 am Sunday morning. As to the height, that will not be a problem.

I would call your local CHP office and see what they say. Maybe they will give you an escort. Smile

When I lived there in the mid 70's, they were some of the nicest individuals in law enforcement that I have ever met. I would be interested in their system of weeding out the undesirables.
