OTOH, when I use my iPhone for Apple Pay face recognition is required. But no face recognition is required when I use my Apple Watch for Apple Pay, so not as secure.

Woot has Apple Watches on sale all the time, the last batch had the Series 8 both GPS + Cellular for $4240 these are Grade A refurbished.

They are sold out as this came out a few days ago, there are Series 6 which has both fall detection and the AFIB warning as well for $150 to $165.

Get on the list and you'll get notice when they come up if you want a Series 8.

I just checked with the provider that I use (Spectrum Mobile). They charge a one-time $20 activation fee to add an Apple Watch to my existing iPhone service plan, and a $10 monthly service plan fee.

I suggest getting the cellular version of whatever you decide. I think I pay 15 extra a month to have the cell line attached to it. Its worth every penny.

Worth it to you, I assume, but an additional cellular line isn’t worth its cost to me, given that my Apple Watch makes cell calls if my iPhone is in Bluetooth range.

However, that raises an interesting point. You can make a 911 call from a cellphone with NO cellular plan. That would apply to the cellular version of an Apple Watch, too. Some folks would like that proposition. Not me, though.

The idea is that when you put on the watch, you authenticate to the watch with the passcode which is good until it comes off your wrist. Your phone you could leave around, so the face is used to auth whenever a payment option is needed. On the watch though, it's assumed that someone didn't cut off your arm to take it into the local grocery store to make a purchase.
