But why not buy the chain that matches the sprocket it comes with?
That's perfectly fine too, but I think there are a few varieties of chains/teeth that are only available in 3/8. If you don't need one of them, no reason to switch.

FishOnReporting back: This 261 SMOKES. Broke it in today and took down a pine and a dead maple. Cuts like a hot knife through butter, with tons of power in reserve. Perfect weight and balance. Fantastic saw. Thanks for the advice.

I paid MSRP, which is 599.00. Then I bought an extra chain and the case and bar oil and some fuel.
I had to call several dealers before finding one in stock. Most local area shops are back-ordered.

261 is a great saw. Most Stihl saws build a bit of power and response over the first handful of tanks of gas. Once you get about 5 tanks of gas through it, then you'll really be cooking!

Yeah thats what they were telling me. It's really great right out of the box, but should be screaming after 5 tanks of fuel.

It is the stock configuration with a 20 inch bar. I'll have to look at the sprocket and chain but its what the Stihl dealer set up for me.
