We have a 13 year old Shih-Tzu, Molly. She used to be a pretty good sleeper at night, but for the last several months, she wakes up in the middle of the night to wander around, and maybe move to someone else's room. Lately she's been waking up and scratching on a door so we can let her go outside to the bathroom. Yesterday we cut down the amount of food we gave her for dinner, and she slept all night. I don't know if that helped, or if we just got lucky.

Any suggestions on helping her sleep through the night? We've tried taking her for walks during the day to get her tired, but that doesn't seem to do anything.

Do you feed twice a day? Does she seem in pain?

You may try CBD oil from some place like CannaPet, Jeff Yarchin on here can give you more info.

Have her blood sugar checked. She might be developing diabetes.

Had a husky that would do that. Hear him wander down the hardwood to the living room and sleep for a few hours at his favorite spot by the couch. Early morning, he'd wander back, once again wander down the hardwood. Roll Eyes

No - we only feed her once a day in the evening.

Our Norfolk Terrier became anxious at night. Kept getting up in the middle of the night, go outside and pee, then get some water. He would also pant heavily. He was about 14 years old when it started and the vet thinks it could be from a couple things. He has thyroid issues and also very early stages of dementia.
We have been giving him CBD oil from Nuleaf for about a year and it has helped out. He rarely has an "episode" now.

Has she been to the vet lately? Lots of things can happen as our dog's age.

I might feed her half in the morning and a half in the evening. All the food in the evening may make her drink more water then if she just had half. That may have been fine while she was younger.

Vet first though to make she everything is good if you haven't done that yet.

Our dog is a little over 12. We had to adjust her schedule as she got older. We feed her twice a day. The last time is around 5 pm, with that being the last time she gets water for the day. She gets a good amount of water with dinner.

She is let out an hour after she eats, about 45 to 60 minutes after that, again about 45 to 60 minutes later, then the last time at bed time. She has done well with this schedule for several years now.

If there are no health issues, restricting your girl's water after dinner might work for you.

Our girl getting exercise during the day helps, also.

We just switched our 14 year old to a senior food and give a smaller portion for dinner. Seems to have helped.

Work with your vet to see if your pup has a medical issues.

CBD’s are an excellent option. We use them everyday for our 10 year old labs.

We only use full spectrum, US sourced and made products. Canna Pet biscuits are easy to use. Oils are more cost effective. We like Kingdom Harvest oils, a veteran owned, Asheville, NC based company.

Look for simple solutions. She's 13+. Her systems are less efficient than they once were. Feeding her half in the morning and half 'early' evening, then getting her outside a few times before bed while restricting her water intake might help her make it through the night easier. Start there. You can always default to a vet exam if the simple stuff doesn't resolve the issue.

I have a 13year old Airedale the suffers from arthritis in his hips. I'm desperately looking for a way to improve his life.
I bought a bottle of CBD oil yesterday and gave him 7 drops as directed by the seller, I think he was worse after the dose. Heavy breathing, restless, and more difficulty getting to his feet. I will with hold the oil and see if he gets back to normal.
My concern about the oil is the lack of documentation as to what is actually in the bottle. The recommended dose given by a guy selling pot products is hardly comforting as to professional recommendations.
The manufactures name is NOT reassuring either," HEMP BOMBS"

If you haven't started yet, put him on aspirin at least twice a day. Look online for the amount per pound. My elderly 20 lb mixed breed get two twice a day for same thing. Otherwise go to vet and they will prescribe pain med. Sounds like he needs something fairly strong. Best of luck.

This is what we're going to try. Hopefully it will work! If not, we'll take her in for a checkup.

Thanks everyone for your help!

You actually hit on it. Feed her only in the late
evening. Unless you want a watch dot at night.

13 years old is not a young pooch. Other than adjusting her feed time have a vet check her out.

Stay safe

He already is taking 2, 75mg, tablets of Carprofen each day, its prescription doggy aspirin. I may up the doses to 3 a day and see if it helps. Next step is a trip to the Vet to get more suggestions.
I may try the CBD again in the future.
Thanks for your suggestion.
