Mao Zedong is often credited with the quotation, “[All] Power comes (or grows) from the barrel of a gun.” The similarity of the supposed quotation by Stalin that specifically mentions a “long rifle” makes me suspicious of the citation. (And short rifles don’t provide any power?)

We see bogus quotations* attributed to famous people all the time, and it’s even been a topic of discussion here, so I wouldn’t accept and pass on anything not confirmed by good independent research.

* The “definition of insanity” supposedly by Einstein and “rough men” by George Orwell are two of my favorites.

Maybe some quotes are legit. But, some of the time, hanging out on the internet is like gun shop advice.

Actual conversation today

LGS clerk (while standing in front of a wall of arm brace guns)- I wouldn’t be given an arm brace. They’re arrested people for owning them now.

Me- Really? Who got arrested?

LGS guy- well, I don’t know but legal scholars on the internet are saying people are getting arrested for it.

Me- Really? What legal scholars?

LGS- the ones posting videos on the internet.

Me- so some guy on the internet got arrested for possessing an arm brace.

LGS- no, that’s not what I said.

Me- cool, what’s the USC that they are being arrested for?

LGS- you tell me smart guy.

A few weeks ago, another guy in the same shop proudly announced- do you know that only a ATF agent can ask to see your tax stamp paperwork?

And they are absolutely convinced because they saw some guy who they don’t know say it in a video. And they won’t be talked out of what they “know”.

I am just now wading into the NFA. Always too much of a pain in the ass before. So I ask, who can demand to see paperwork for no reason? I’m assuming federal law enforcement but I am not sure about state and local if they don’t have a reason. No actual idea however. My theory is if a guy shows me a badge and asks I will show him the paperwork but I don’t really know the rules.

26 USC lays out the statutory requirements for maintaining and display of your paperwork. What most people do not know is that your stamp is actually tax documents and therefore has some extra protection from prying eyes.

ATF agents, task force officers, and other members of an ATF task force can ask to see your paperwork and you have a statutory requirement to produce it. However, the thing that most people dont comprehend is that ATF agents can’t request the NFA branch to see what NFA items you have in your name without a warrant or court order. Because tax documents.


The reason there is no statutory requirement to show local LE your stamp is due to it being tax paperwork. However, local LE sworn into an ATF task force you are required to. In most cases, they have identical powers to an agent. ATF uses task forces as force multipliers.

Some local cop comes and asks to see mine, I’m going to show them the paper so they’ll go away. Local LE here doesn’t care about regular people and guns though. Game wardens are hated because they hassle people while they are trying to have fun. Cops should learn from it.
