If I didn't need text messaging for 2FA for some accounts, I'd just disable it entirely. I've mainly transitioned to Signal Private Messenger for texting for most who really matter to me.

I may consider doing that. Part of me says then that lets them know they have a “live” number.

You’re right about that.

Furthermore, if you have an iPhone, they’ll know if you even read it before deleting it. I can always tell if it’s a spam text from the automatically displayed first part of the message. I delete such messages without opening them.

Why would that be? Can't you deny read receipts?

Not that I know of. But with my method there’s no need to.

My 13 year old got one just now. He never puts his phone number anywhere and only calls a few people. It said something about your USPS package but the link goes to a spoofed Fedex survey (yeah, we clicked it. i like clicking things to see how good of a spoof it is).

Correct me if I am wrong but aren"t the political calls/text exempt from the no call list. And what do you do when you get a call from your OWN number. ............................................ drill sgt.

I blocked my own house phone number last year. It wasn't a problem because I never call my house from my house.

I received a email from FedEx yesterday saying my package arrived. I was expecting one and checked outside. Nothing, so I clicked the FedEx logo and it started taking to me to another website. I closed it immediately. There was a link in it which, may have been the same as the logo? I looked on the internet to see if I could find anything out? Only thing close was from 2016.

I believe that's only true if both sender and recipient use iPhones. That, I believe, is an aspect of iMessage.

I just perused several of my text message conversations. The only ones that show "delivered" or "read" were people I know also using iPhones.
