Some of us are disallowed from carrying boomsticks, so I'm thinking of constructing a walking stick of some sort. Any forum members carry such on their various forays? Any have made your own?

Sounds hokey, I admit, but this one was purchased at the Garden of the Gods gift shop in Colorado Springs during a family trip. Actually, its predecessor was bought there. I managed to snap the original stick while on a Scouting orienteering trip. I'd held onto the card that came with the stick that included, happily enough, warranty info. I was within the first year of purchase and they sent me a new stick! I wish I could quote what type of wood this is, the maker, etc. - I no longer have the specs. I take it on hikes and even on walks around the neighborhood, more to ward off four-legged critters who might not want to play nice than anything else. It does also impart a rather Buford Pusser-esque presence and / or makes the bearer look prepared to invoke a Divine parting of a body of water. (P.S., I'm a recent Imgur convert from Photobucket - not sure how to size a pic yet for normal viewing - any hints / tips are appreciated). (Edited - think I found a right-sized option via PostImage). "The sea was angry that day, my friends - like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli." - George Costanza

Yes! I've been there, and that's a great place for a stick.

The gift shop had some excellent choices. If I lived in Co Spgs, I think I'd have to go to GOTG weekly at least - just beautiful. "The sea was angry that day, my friends - like an old man trying to send back soup in a deli." - George Costanza

Interesting. Looks innocuous at first glance, but the way it's gripped I could see it really putting the hurt on someone.

I have a Saguaro Cactus spline walking/hiking stick. It's very lightweight and very strong for the weight. Very happy with it. I just treated it well with boiled linseed oil. A regular rubber chair leg tip on the end but could put a spike, whatever, or nothing at all there. You can't really see the true patina or character the spline has from this photo taken about ten years ago ... EDIT: I'm 5'8" and this spline is a perfect length at 51 1/4". Yes, I dialed it in. Start with longer than you think you might need. You can take away but can't add. Good for either walking or hiking for me, but technically more of a hiking length than walking length for most I guess.

Yes, I am probably going to use Tru-oil on mine (which is like 11% boiled linseed oil). I'll bet that dog knew it was walk time whenever you went any where near that stick.

I recently got out of the VA Hospital and after being bed ridden for almost 2 months my balance was shot. Prior to being released the sent me to PT and was fitted with and cane and instructions. When I got home I remembered the forum entry on canes and called Cane Masters. 3 days later I got mine with a discount as a vet. Good deal! Officers lives matter!

+1 on the Irish blackthorn. Beautiful and effective. Or you could leave CA for a free state. I did.

I use a carbon fiber trekking pole. It is light, collapses into four 15-inch long sections, and has removable rubber tip concealing a carbide tip. I take the rubber tip off when walking outdoors, for example in an urban setting, where a long, sort of sharp pointy thing attached to me might come in handy for making holes in things. If a security person asks about it, I explain a physical therapist suggested it to help me with balance and gait after an injury. That makes it a medical device. Heavy profile shovel handle. Ash preferred. Cut to 40" in length. Quite satisfactory.
