Probably Dilaudid...that was the only thing that worked for me on my last one...thank God the nurse was not stingy with it...good stuff Wink

Dude.... dilaudid is AWESOME...

While I didn't have a kidney stone, I had a gallstone scoped before removing my gallbladder...

I hadn't been admitted to a hospital for nearly 30 years and when the meds hit me, it was like curling up in a warm blanket and everything felt perfect for a good long time... I had been doubled over in agony about an hour prior and then... nothing...

Thankfully I got off the stuff but dang, it was good. Wink

I had the exact situation a few months ago. Was told they would probably need to go in and break it up with a laser but I opted to wait a few weeks. I wasn't having constant pain. One day I'd be fine the next agony which got tiresome. Called and set an appointment for the procedure the following week. Fortunately I passed the stone over the weekend and was able to cancel. Dr. says I have another in the other kidney but it's not fully formed and down low so it shouldn't be a problem for a while. At least I have something to look forward too...sigh.

There are medications that can be used to reduce kidney stone buildup or size, and in addition to drinking large quantities of water, adding lemon juice to the water can be very helpful. Avoid dark green vegetables, and dark sodas.

I'm pretty sure mine was self inflicted. Soo much caffeine soda, not enough water. I had also taken a fairly hard fall earlier that day during an aikido session, and I believe that had something to do with breaking the stone loose. I've cut back considerably on being beaten up since that time and out of an abundance of caution, have retreated to old man mode.

Do yourself a favor and google chanca piedra. Amazon and whole foods carry it in something called stone free.

Also drink lots of real lemonade.

One of the most common stone types (calcium oxylate) can be problematic and more likely to form WITH drinking cranberry juice. So maybe avoid that.

I have had 2 stones....12/10 pain with each and both required cystoscopy for retrieval.

I better go drink some water....

If you start having the pain: Beer. It helps with the pain and makes you have to pee which helps flush it out. This was the off the record advice from the ER doctor when I had my first one.

I passed a 6x9mm stone after about 4 months of intermittent lower back and flank pain. It moved from kidney to bladder while I was offshore (Quite painful). A week later passed it with flomax. I'll spare you the picture.

2. Until then, drink as much lemonade as you can handle. The acid helps reduce them.

My doc told me that if I had to drink soda, drink mello yellow, as it has citric acid in it. My stones are made from dark stuff in tea, coffee, sodas..

Lastly, you could have passed it already and didn’t know. With the several I’ve had, once they leave the kidney and get to the bladder, it’s smooth sailing- they say the urethra is bigger diameter then the ureter.

re #2

depends on the composition of the stone,

my Uro recommended I drink Lemonade, orange or grapefruit juice,
and lay off the soda and tea (can't give up the tea)

the acids change in the kidney and coat the stones, making them smoother, and easier to pass faster,

I've passed almost a dozen large (biggest was like a piece of long grain rice with teeth on each end,,,) and and unknown number of smaller ones,
fortunately, they only hurt when they leave the kidney, and I have not had to be scoped/lasered,

I have however been scoped to check out my bladder to make sure the blood was just from the stones,

that sucked, passing a stone was more pleasant

btw, water is your friend, drink a lot,,
if you are having to pee a bit more than normal, that is good,

and if you drink beer, drink good beer (advice from my Uro) in moderation

my largest I shook loose (as in moved around the kidney a lot) in May (about 10 yrs ago)
fukker hurt on and off until that Oct, when I was on vacation I bought one of those mini kegs (5ltr?) of Bell's Two Hearted, and proceeded one Sat to empty it,
started at noon, got most of it done by 11 or so PM, and woke up around 3am feeling like someone had put a hot poker in my back,

then suddenly,, nothing,

pissed the big bastard out the next morning, that part did not hurt

Lets see up to 12/13 of them suckers. Some passed quickly others took there time. All hurt. Flowmax can help,Lemonade also but usually docs want you to drink alot of water and stay away from dark sodas(Coke etc.) and coffee. Watch your calcium intake(milk,Tums etc). Dilaudid did not touch the pain a couple of times, other times by the time I got to the ER I would puke then pee and see it kerplunk in the bowl and you would feel immediate relief.. Hate those suckers

How did that go?
Just got home from the urologist and Xrays...looks like my current situation may result that procedure to remove an 11MM (if it were a 10MM stone the whole hospital would have been destroyed Big Grin) sometimes around the first part of August (hospital will not do lithotripsy while I'm on any anticoagulant, aspirin included (neurologist is balking on my being off) I've heard horror stories from friends...especially about the removal of the stent, which I will have afterwards Frown)...whatever is done to me when I'm knocked out really doesn't bother me...it's the "awake" part that concerns me (if I die while I'm under...just split up my shit amongst yourselves Big Grin...I won't care).

My urologist had his own way of removing the stent.
Something like “I’m going to count to three, one...boom!”
My wife waiting outside heard me yell, then laugh uproariously.

That's what I am afraid of (maybe not "afraid of"...I'm a fearless kinda man...yeah right Big Grin )...but I'm just giving such things "my full attention" Wink...just sayin' Razz...had a doctor pull a deep hemovac drain out of my hip years ago without warning...I grabbed his tie and damn near punched him in the face (resulting in many apologies from him about doing this without letting me have a heads up before...the whole incident scared a nurse standing next to him shitless...I actually felt bad for my actions Frown)

All of the methods had the desired effect, but I will warn you that they involve a catheter in the urinary tract. It takes an OR to put the tube in, but they remove it in the urologist's office. That removal may have caused more pain (albeit very briefly) than the stone itself. As noted by the posters above, the size of the stone will likely dictate your next step. I have passed a bunch, but the ones they removed were too large and were possibly going to block the ureter (you don't want to there). I'm sure the scans will determine the size and help with the decision.

13? Good Lord. Have you considered changing your diet to avoid the foods that cause your stones?

Kidney stones are NOT all diet related. Some folks have genetic predispostions to develop stones.

I agree with this post...I have two brothers that are also dealing with these small but painful little bastages other than me...they both have followed the info and recommendations on the net to reduce the potential of forming and the reoccurrence of stones...me, not so much...but at the end of the day when the sun goes down, all three of us have a history of stones. As a point of info...stones run on my dad's side of the family's men (uncles, cousins and such) I think we just don't have the genes on that side of the family to handle whatever it is what causes us to be prone to kidney stones.

Being genetic doesn't mean the stones can't be controlled by avoiding the foods that cause them. If you have calcium oxalate stones, then don't be eating the foods that are high in oxalate. If you're prone to stones because of genetics, merely hoping you don't get another one—doesn't work.

Was not fun as she kept slapping me beside my head as I kept passing out and her yelling at me,don't you die on me
Then that out of country doctor would not give me and meds till I accidentally puked on him.after the shot I woke up the next afternoon.
