Whole house generator
I’m thinking about getting a whole house generator and it seems like it’s mostly Generac or Kohler. I would probably need a 24+ kw. It would also need to run on propane. Is it best to find an installer through the generators website or can any decent electrical contractor be able to do it.

Anything to look out for as far as units or installation.

If you go through an authorized dealer / Installer they often offer extended warranties for little or nothing .

I did use the search function. I probably missed it but any generator search I used came up with the typical small fill em with gasoline generators. I couldn't find whole house generators powered by propane and needing professional installation.

Hope I don’t jinx myself, 14 yrs,5 months on gas fired Generac 20kw. Has been excellent in WV windstorms & falling trees. We love it.
Good Luck you way!

Ps… Dealer recommended installers. Went with the Master Electrician & a natural gas man he recommended.

Have 2 more coming in the next 2 weeks.

Is that quote for an air-cooled or liquid-cooled model?

Air cooled, also with the mobile unlink
I'm assuming liquid cooled jumps the price considerably

Some of the neighbors have whole house generators. One has a liquid-cooled. The others are air-cooled.

Although it is not often that we lose power, one never knows when it will happen.
During hurricane Ike we were without power for 36 hours. A couple of streets away they were without power for 2 or 3 weeks.

I’m jonesing for a liquid-cooled one.
Runs at half the speed and is much quieter.

Maybe when we downsize into the next house.

We planned on installing one when we were house hunting in 2019. Ended up buying one with a 22kwh whole house generator already installed. Have had multiple outages of a few minutes to a few hours which one have been a minor inconvenience. It was a God send during the 2021 freeze. We were toasty warm and watching DVDs (Xfinity backup power lasted less than 24 hrs). Put up an offer for neighbors to come over to warm up, grab some coffee, charge cellphones but no one took us up on it. Of course this was during Covid so understandable.

That’s kind of where I was hoping they would be. Let us know if the other bids are in the same ballpark.

I went with air cooled, a liquid cooled is double the cost of air cooled when I looked at them.

Going thru the process of installing a Generac 24kw unit with an auto switch, 2 120 gal propane tanks. Went with a private electrical company. Had to purchase the tanks, roughly 6k$ with propane, close to 11k$ for the unit and install.

Bought a 24kW Generac NG air-cooled for $11.5k installed w/ tax a year ago, would do it again.

valkyrie1, where roughly in Florida. I'm up in Citrus Springs and thinking of the same idea. I got quotes similar to the national debt. I like the idea of the dual 120 lb tanks. Easier to get in here and I think they don't need permitted.

We had a Kohler put in the end of March, with a 500 gal propane tank, for around $11K. The power's gone out a few times since then. Mostly for just a few hours, but once for two days.

It sure is better than hauling the portable genny up from the barn just to keep the essentials running. Now the power goes off, and in a few seconds, the generator cranks up & everything's working again.

I live in Ormond Beach and both tank and generator needs a permit. I didn’t have room to bury the tanks, oh well. As long as HOA approved it and you can’t see from the road Im ok. Went with Total Comfort for tanks and Palmetto electric for the generator and install. Some companies are outrageous, 20k just for the gen and install.
