Apparently the ship began taking on significant water and is now listing heavily. ![]() This message has been edited. They'd better find the hole, plug it, and start pumping out water! flashguy Texan by choice, not accident of birth

Damn that little ass pump is bs. Get some damn 3” or 4” pumps and get ahead of the damn water asap. That pump they are using should have been in place from the getgo and when it couldn't keep up bring in something bigger. Hell i have little 2” pump in the garage that will pump two or three times what the current one is. Pumps and hose are cheap no reason that thing is that far over.

Sad to see. I grew up in Buffalo and that museum was one of my favorite places to visit. Hope they get things better quick

The articles I’ve read claim they are pumping 13,000 gallons a minute. That’s a little less than my swimming pool in a minute. The real problem, according to articles from last year, is the hull needed extensive repairs and was already taking on water. Repairs had started last year, but were suspended when the water temperature went below 54 degrees. Apparently, the epoxy being used doesn’t cure below that temperature. “ In February of 2021, damage to the ship’s hull resulted in leaks that put the ship in danger of sinking.” Save the Sullivans Quote from a good article written in November 2021: “ From the moment word got out that the Canalside destroyer was listing and taking on water, offers to help began pouring in from as far away as Australia and Japan.” Article

I remember my mom talking about the Sullivan brothers on several occasions when I was a kid. It seems even worse when recalling those the ship honors. _______________________________________________________ despite them

The Uss Laffey sank at the pier at Patriots Point when I was stationed in Charleston in the early 90s. All the CG units and ships responded along with pumps from the Navy. We managed to plug the holes and de-water the ship. But maintenance hadn’t been done and none of the compartments were watertight. So we replaced the gaskets in doors and then we we’re able to seal off spaces while draining others. The hardest part was trying to seal the holes due to the mud all the way to the waterline. DCs had to wade into the mud and place soft patching along the entire hull where saltwater had eaten thru the hull. I hope they get her floated. Didn’t grow up there, but my paternal grandparents lived in the apartments on Marine Drive and my grandfather, a WWII Navy vet, would take me to see the ships every time I visited. I’ve been aboard The Sullivans a number of times. This is sad for me. ______________________________________________ Endeavoring to master the subtle art of the grapefruit spoon.

Big capitol ships like battleships and some aircraft carriers usually pull-in a sizable amount of donations annually and attract events but, these small boys and various unique period vessels struggle, not only with funds but also volunteers with useful skills. Too many times I've gone aboard a museum ship, and many of the guys there are more likely to be the weekly barflies at the Elk's Lodge or, VFW, than contributing any skill to ship upkeep. Lots of jury-rigging and patching-over, rather than restoring and maintaining. Hopefully the case with DD-537 can be patched up and get some love.

DD 537 was my first ship. I reported aboard in Summer, 1963, and we decommissioned her in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in 1965. I was planning a visit next week. USS The Sullivans Foundation has been raising money for over a year to repair the ship. Hopefully this situation will spur donations. No way of knowing yet if this is salvageable. If the hull is super corroded (and the speakers in the video imply it is), and if it settled onto the bottom (and the still photos imply it has), the weak points of the hull may have caved in. It might be more like a screen-door than a hull now. === I would like to apologize to anyone I have *not* offended. Please be patient. I will get to you shortly.
