Ok, it really is a BFD for Alaska residents. Every year the Park Service opens the road into Denali to private vehicles for 3 days. Permits are limited and awarded by lottery system. Typically only 1 in 7 pulls a permit. I put in and got it. All other days of the year the road is closed to private vehicles and the only way in is by bus tour or park concessionaire.

So Sunday, September 15th I'll be in Denali hoping for great weather for photography and hoping I don't get munched by a bear.

Update:

The importance of supporting your local camera shop.

Looking at getting a slimline zoom or bridge camera. Something small to keep in the truck or throw in a daypack for when I don't feel like packing my DSLR. Went to BestBuy, lots of cameras, no knowledgable sales staff. Went to Stewart's downtown, not a lot of cameras but a very knowledgable sales staff. Didn't but anything yet. But made a comment about winning the road lottery.

"You know we rent large telephoto lenses..."

I now have a Nikon 200-500 big ass telephoto lens reserved for that weekend.

This is turning into an expensive weekend. Already have reservations made at McKinley Lodge the night before and after, just rented the camera lens, I'll probably upgrade the tires on the truck earlier than I was planning (OEM all seasons are not suited for an Alaska winter driving) and now I may fly my daughter up for the trip as well. That last one will also include a shopping trip to Cabela's, Duluth Trading Company and Big Ray's to outfit my desert rat of a daughter for September in Alaska.

Me too!

Is there any special precautions or procedures you need to do photography in the temps?

As a bear avoidance tactic - don't go wandering around with ribeyes draped around your neck. That should mitigate their interest in you... somewhat. Smile

The 90 mile road into Denali National Park. First 15 miles anyone can drive, but the remaining 75 miles (ie the pretty part) the only motorized transportation is busses. DNP Visits are a lot like Jurassic Park due to seeing nature from the busses. Most people only hike around the major bus stops.

How far the OP will be able to go on his day will be very very weather dependent.

Congratulations! Only been to Alaska once (6-7 years ago) and the long trip to the end in Denali was definitely the highlight of the trip.

Congrats! My dad was drawn quite a few years back, and was fortunate enough to have decent weather. The pics he took are amazing. Some really cool things to see up there. He said the mosquitos are damn near hummingbird sized, everywhere, and aggressive. Good luck and praying you get some awesome weather.

It is the only road that goes into Denali National Park. Typically only accessed by Park tour busses and some private concessionaires. So yes, to be able to drive myself, stop whenever I want, wherever I want and take as many pictures as I want without having to worry about having to get back onto a bus with 60 of my closest friends is a dream come true.
