wcb6092Bill Gates Is Now America’s Biggest Owner of Farmland
https://www.theepochtimes.com/...-report_3658236.htmlBill Gates, Microsoft co-founder and the fourth most wealthy person in the world, has acquired more than 242,000 acres of farmland across the United States, making him the top private farmland owner in the country.
The Land Report, a magazine provided by the Realtors Land Institute, said that based on its research, Bill and Melinda Gates obtained “an estimated 242,000 acres of farmland” overall. That farmland portfolio stretches across 18 states, according to the report.
The Gates’ largest holdings are in Louisiana with about 69,000 acres, Arkansas with about 47,000 acres, Nebraska with about 20,000 acres, and more, according to The Land Report.
“It is not entirely clear how Gates’ farmland is being used, or whether any of the land is being set aside for conservation,” Forbes noted. Cascade Investments, Gates’ personal investment company, did not return Forbes’ request for comment, while The Epoch Times has reached out for comment. A spokesperson for Cascade also declined to comment on The Land Report.
“However, there is some indication that the land could be used in a way that aligns with the foundation’s values. Cottonwood Ag Management, a subsidiary of Cascade, is a member of Leading Harvest, a nonprofit that promotes sustainable agriculture standards that prioritize protections of crops, soil, and water resources,” according to Forbes.
According to The Land Report, it appears the Gates’ started to purchase farmland relatively recently.
“The Gateses’ largest single block of dirt was acquired in 2017: a group of farmland assets owned by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board. Based in Toronto, the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board began assembling an agricultural portfolio in 2013, when it acquired AgCoA, aka, Agricultural Company of America,” the report noted. “This private U.S. farmland [Real Estate Investment Trust] was a joint venture between Duquesne Capital Management and Goldman Sachs that launched in 2007. Over the next five years, AgCoA acquired more than 100,000 acres in nine states. By the time it was sold to the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board in 2013, AgCoA ranked as one of the leading institutional owners of row crop farmland in the U.S.”
Cascade noted that Gates also purchased a large stake in about 24,800 acres of land just west of Phoenix, Arizona.
The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has been involved in agriculture initiatives in other countries, including in sub-Saharan African and South Asian ones.
Forbes magazine notes that Gates has a net worth of about $121 billion. Forbes noted that Gates is not the largest individual landowner in the United States. That spot belongs to Liberty Media Chair John Malone, who owns 2.2 million acres of ranches and forests. Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, meanwhile, owns about 420,000 acres of land primarily in West Texas.

Rey HRHReading this makes me think of Joseph in the Bible but not in a good way.
"It did not really matter what we expected from life, but rather what life expected from us. We needed to stop asking about the meaning of life, and instead to think of ourselves as those who were being questioned by life – daily and hourly. Our answer must consist not in talk and meditation, but in right action and in right conduct. Life ultimately means taking the responsibility to find the right answer to its problems and to fulfill the tasks which it constantly sets for each individual." JupiterBill Gates is pretty heavily invested in the synthetic meat business. That should stick in one's crawl next time they polish off an Impossible Whopper.

Well, isn't that kinda important to the story? Would it take a simple Google satellite search to determine if the land is currently in use for ag?
Twenty five thousand acres west of Phoenix doesn't sound like he's growing corn or hay.
Again, is it an investment in corporate farming or is it land conservation of previously ranched/farmed lands?
Lazy reporting.

WeaseldriverI guess this is interesting because it's Bill but it's only 242 thousand acres out of 945 million acres of farmland in the U.S. If owned by another guy named Bill, not so interesting.

TMatsWhat happened to Ted Turner’s land? I know he had much more than 242k. This story doesn’t ring true.

I'm guessing it might end up being a Solar Farm???
A Solar Farm receives alternative energy credits, but I wonder if it also qualifies for USDA farm grants and subsidies???

DakorGiven how terrible the reporting is, why is this even posted? He's not The Biggest Owner, not even close.
There's several corporations that own far more and looking closely, I can say I personally know one individual whose foundation (and therefore he b/c it's equivalent to how Gates is purchasing land) owns more agrible land than Gates in the U.S.
There's a certain family in HI that owns the largest ranch in the world, which dwarfs even Malone's holdings. So fucking what.

GraniteguySo the worlds largest promoter and proponent of population reduction also happens to be the largest owner of farmland in the US. Yeah - never saw that coming.

mesabiHe's not a farmer, he's a speculator. With the push for "green" by those who know and care little about the environment, and the pathetic corruption of the incoming administration, I think we'll see a lot more wind turbines and solar farms (both of which I despise for the most part) being put up in the wide-open spaces, or flyover country as some people call it. Probably the same reason why Jeff Bezos owns thousands of acres in west Texas. Of course we'll need to apply eminent domain to get those transmission lines built, but it will be easier with allies in power.
I'm always bemused by people who think big oil is corrupt, rapacious, and greedy; but think big wind or solar is somehow different.

bryan11At a local Agriculture conference several of the largest food company CEOs (General Mills, Tyson, etc) said as soon as lab grown meat is cheaper they will switch to it. They have already done focus and marketing studies and people like the no steroids, no antibiotics, and no animal harmed characteristics for lab meat. It's mostly price, though.
Once they switch, that could have some big changes in how farmland is used. About 40% of all corn is livestock feed, so if demand for livestock decreases farmers will need to switch crops. The way they talk about it, it's all just a matter of time.

Thanks for the link. Legislation is quietly being passed all over the U.S. to speed this agenda along and few are paying attention.
