This is going break a lot of people who aren't well-to-do. Literally break them economically. We're far better off making them lower cost loans than letting them go broke. My view, too. This situation is truly a disaster for many, many people. At such times it is, in my opinion, right and proper for the government to step up and help.

LAKE COUNTY, Ill. -- Hurricane Harvey swept through Texas, devastating communities, who are left coping with flooded streets and homes. In Illinois, a group of people from Lake County can empathize with the hardship and are heading south to lend a hand to those in need.

In July, Lake County suffered its own flooding, and a group of more than 24 people from Southern Baptist Disaster Relief came to Lake County to help the victims clean out their homes. The trained volunteers worked long days to carry out debris from damaged basements, cut out dry wall and mold. Now Illinois' branch of the Baptist Disaster Relief initiative will be doing the same in Texas.

This past month, the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief's affiliate group, Texas Baptist Men, sent out volunteers to Lake County to help with the cleanup. They left Illinois and returned to Texas just five days before Harvey hit.

Group supervisor, Chaplain Ric Worshill says he was amazed at how the local community stepped up to help the victims in Texas. They recalled how the Texas volunteers didn't have a place to stay. They ended up sleeping at the Wildwood Presbyterian Church in Grayslake and relied on donations for showers and food.

The local chapter of Southern Baptist Disaster Relief decided it’s time to return the favor. They are planning to head down to Houston.

But they need to recruit at least 30 people to go.

“We’re looking for anyone who is willing to go down and do dirty work. Mud out cleaning is one of the hardest there is,” Worshill said.

While it may be tough work, some say it’s therapeutic.

“The easiest way to heal from something is to do something for somebody else who is broken,” Worshill said.

Neighbors informed me that my house did NOT flood, and neither did any of my neighbors. It came over the curb but didn't cross the sidewalk. My neighborhood was an island cutoff.

The neighborhood next to us (closer to Spring Creek) flooded and there were both boat rescues and military helicopter rescues.

Update: Houston's Mayor imposed a curfew on Tuesday after the US city saw record rainfall and catastrophic flooding in the wake of tropical storm Harvey.

The curfew will start at midnight and end at 5am, Mayor Sylvester Turner explained. Originally it was supposed to start earlier (as per his tweet below), but Turner said he wanted "to allow volunteers and others to do their great work."

We detailed earlier that as Tropical Storm Harvey heads back inland, slamming southwest Texas with another 15-25 inches of rain, Housting officials are reporting that the city's critical infrastructure is starting to fail under the weight of the floodwaters, and may soon collapse.

According to Reuters, roads and bridges in Houston have started to buckle under the impact of the catastrophic flooding in parts of the city. According to Jeff Linder of the Harris County Flood Control District, one bridge had collapsed and some roads had been damaged by the torrential rains.

Be safe on your drive in, I was in Conroe this afternoon & 45 was clear down to 99. Didn't attempt Rayford yet, as it was closed at the RR tracks last I saw.
99 was clear from 290 to past Rayford.

And if you're constantly watching the news here (not much else to do when almost all the roads are closed unless you drive a Unimog) you'll see that scene repeated in neighborhood after neighborhood. We measured over 39" here. I'm sure it was more because one night it overflowed the rain gauge. The director of the Harris County Flood District in a press conference said a spot in Pasadena saw 15" in 30 minutes. No drainage system can keep up with that. Same director said every watershed in the area has overflowed its banks. The flooding covered an area roughly equivalent to the area of the state of NJ. It's dramatic as this, but widespread. It's pretty much overwhelmed everything.
