Benton's Bacon caught my attention a few years ago when a Sigforumite posted the best bacon review of all time:
quote:
If you have an enemy, somebody that you would really like to do something that will ruin their life. If this person loves Bacon, I mean really loves Bacon....then send him/her a pound of this stuff. At first is will seem as if you have done him/her a major solid, that you are attempting to bury the hatchet.... but then ....the pound will be quickly gone....and he/she is going to have to go back to that stuff they call Bacon at the Grocery Store.... he/she will be standing on the Bacon aisle at the store, looking for something comparable to Benton Bacon.... there is nothing comparable to Benton Bacon...and in that moment of frustration and longing...they will know...what you have done to them....you will have ruined them forever for being able to enjoy the readily available stuff. Then they know that you were indeed buried the hatchet.....in their back."

I haven't tried it yet, but I have a childhood friend that lives 20 miles from there and says it's awesome.

Just a coincidence, but this afternoon a buddy (another old disabled veteran) gave me a couple of pounds of his home-smoked bacon. Said he got really serious about the project and turned out about 60 pounds, now he is in need of freezer space so he is clearing some out. I am looking forward to it! I have enjoyed his briskets.

Benton's

They do sell over the counter retail despite the web site only mentioning mail order... unless they have fixed it in the last ~6 months. I suggested that to the owner in person, he was unaware and said he would look into it with their web guy.

We went buy last fall and bought a 1 year old cured country ham, had them slice, debone and vac seal it in multiple packages. Yummm. Also got some bacon and a couple pounds of their sausage. The sausage has to be kept in an ice chest... They are a nice day trip away from us. Wife thought the bacon was too smokey Roll Eyes

The bacon had better be super for $9/lb and the hams at $18/lb. I like both meats but I don't need to be that fancy.

I miss getting sandwiches at a Robertson's east of here. I don't drive that way any more.

Deep-fried bacon is the stuff of dreams. If you like your bacon crispy (the best way IMHO) then you’ll LOVE deep-fried bacon. Ask your favorite diner to deep-fry your bacon. If they won’t/don’t, find a new diner. Great…now I want bacon…

A whole smoked ~1 yr aged ham, sliced, deboned, and vac packed while we waited was a few cents over $5 per pound picked up last fall.

The 1/2 pound package of ham slices is $9--that's $18/pound.

That sounded really good, so I thought I try some and I put a small order of ham in also. Total came to $45, then I got to the shipping. $37!!!! Yikes. I backed out.
