you might laff at this little ship, but from where I'm sitting it looks quite impressive with a decent on-board set of airplanes...

Here's where it shows how little I know about military aircraft: What's the "open flap" on top of the airplane early in the video? Confused

God bless America.

Smithsonian Channel had a series about the HMS-QE2 called “Rise of the Super Carrier”. It showed USMC aircraft being used for shakedown cruise and training requirements.

Having been on the Enterprise, that landing in the first part didn't register as an actual "landing an airplane on a carrier" for me. I likened it to the self-parking features of some cars today.

We did shoot off a couple of cars off the aft launchers. I don't remember what it was for. The ship was going backwards for safety reasons.

I figured that, but it seemed odd to see it still open after takeoff.

God bless America.

Good to see the RN back in the carrier business. Wish the MoD and parliament would actually outfit the RN with the proper amount of ships and aircraft, none the less, glad to see the RN step up to the plate and glad to help out with a squadron and destroyer. Now they need to get a realistic AEW platform.

The -B model has a lift-fan behind the cockpit. When taking-off or, landing, the air intake opens on top and behind the cockpit; behind the landing gear another hatch opens for the downward exhaust, simultaneously the engine exhaust in the rear, is rotated 90-dgrees downward.

Beautiful ship. Glad to see the RN back in the carrier business. She's the largest ship ever built for the RN, almost 1,000'.

She needs to cruise to the Falklands and do a couple of fly-bys.
