I have given it some time before posting about this, but three weeks ago my entire world came close to being upended. I am thankful and feel fortunate to be able to post with good news instead of being in mourning.

My wife was 36 weeks pregnant with our son when she came down with a bad case of COVID. She had had a very easy pregnancy to that point, but things went downhill quickly. She began to have random blood pressure spikes and shortness of breath. She (thankfully) went to get checked out at the hospital and they kept her overnight. Her doctors decided to induce labor that night when her blood work and vitals were off.

I had dropped my other children off with some relatives and was headed to the hospital when I got a call that I needed to hurry. When I got there and stepped into the maternity suite, I saw right away that things were really wrong. My wife's water had broken and there was a LOT of bright red blood on her and more oozing out.

The hospitalist arrived around the same time along with a team to transport my wife back for surgery. I got to hold her hand for a second and tell my wife that I loved her and that it would be ok. By that point she had lost a lot of blood and she was going into shock. I told her that I'd be there with her the whole time.

In surgery they discovered a placental abruption, but they had moved quickly enough and were able to save both my wife and my son. He was 20.5" long and 7.3 lbs, but needed a week in the NICU to clear his lungs and keep his oxygen up. I am thankful that he's doing great now and eating like he's playing catch up.

I am sure other members have been through something similar, or know someone who has. I now make sure to give my wife and kids a hug when I can, because each moment with them is precious.

Great news that everything turned out okay, but I'd have been scared spitless the whole time!

The title of your OP is sage advice we should all embrace. My mother used to add that you should never have to regret missing an opportunity to have done so.

I was so saddened to read about the ordeal you all had to experience. But I am also so happy to read about the wonderful outcome.

I’m very happy to hear they are both doing well. That has to be a very terrifying experience.

Again, glad this is a positive thread of life.

Congratulations on the newborn son!

Thank you all for the kind words and prayers. I forgot to add in my original post that we decided to name our son Michael after a prayer that has served us well over the years.

I am still unpacking all that happened, but the thing that has stuck with me was that I felt no fear or uncertainty at the time. I believed and still believe that the Lord can move through us in times of crisis and help us rise to the occasion.
