I was wondering if he's doing research for a book. But JD Hayworth, former GOP House member and former Senate candidate and I think current radio talk show host just greeted me at Costco, wearing a red smock with a "JD" nametag. It was 10 min. before closing and the place was empty, so I don't think he was trying to make news. I was really tempted to ask him what the hell he was doing there, but didn't want to be rude, in case he really is down on his luck. Not that Costco is a bad place to work, but I really thought he was a little farther along in his career. No mention of it on his FB or Wiki pages. Still can't believe it.

Well, it would appear that he is an honest man!

He was on Newsmax TV for a while, but a quick check of their host bios doesn't show him.

LinkedIn suggests he is a consultant. Being self-employed, he may not have insurance. Joining Costco might offer health benefits that he needs.

We (sometimes I, in moments of weakness or forgetfulness) joke about people working in, for example, McDonalds and Walmart, but we really shouldn't be down on people doing honest work.

I remember J.D. , glad to see he's considering alternative's.

I remember when he was a sportscaster on the Phoenix FOX affiliate. Hayworth had a signature call for a home run ball that was silly, but I can’t think of it right now. He was thoroughly mediocre as a congressman. I believe he was part of the same broadcast team as Deborah Pyburn, who I kinda had a crush on.

Agreed, it's not the job, it's the person. There are a lot of people working hard in all sorts of jobs and a lot of people just killing time.

He looked ok. I met him back when he was in the House and he was pretty overweight then. I thought I read he had some kind of surgery for that and had been in better shape ever since. He's still not a small guy, but looked good and healthy.

He served in the House for 12 years. I think that means he has full retirement pay. That probably also means healthcare.

Looking at his bio, he is in his early 60's. It could just be that he wants to keep busy and, as some of you said, wants to work honestly. If he is working at Costco because he simply wants to, it really says a lot to me about his humility and his character.

I've run into a lot of retired people that still want a job on their terms (certain days a week, certain amount of hours, etc.) to keep busy or out of the house and don't need the money. Some jobs due to their nature attract retirees. I would think he gets healthcare from his congressional work and a pension. Sounds to me like he just likes greeting people......or perhaps Costco hired him to attract people.....

In college I worked at a marina with a fuel dock, and everyone worked 3-12 hour shifts a week, the dockmaster was a retired Aerospace engineer with a nice pension....One of the dockhands was a retired Union leader for a stevadores union for a shipping port up North.....of all things......the stories he'd tell.

In about ten years when I “retire,” I’ve always wanted to put in a few days a week at a Home Depot or similar. I get enjoyment from talking to people, and it feels nice to help people with a problem. A few weeks ago I helped a guy with a plumbing issue who was getting a load of B.S. from the store help. I enjoyed it.

After decades of land-lording, I might as well pass along some of my experience, instead of just taking it to the grave with me. If I get judged as unsuccessful by others for it, so be it. I know the truth.

Absolutely this. I also have moments of weakness but always try and teach my.son never look down on anyone working for a living. They are being productive members of society and not everyone is lucky enough to have what the rest of us consider a "good" job.

Many probably look down on me for my blue collar job.

I'm not sure if he had his own talk radio show, but I know he stayed busy as a fill in.

Costco pays quite well, by the way.

I have a friend who's a very successful real estate agent. Been in the business since 1984, and raised his own baseball team (nine sons!).

A while back, he worked as an aircraft service (cleaner) person for one of the major airlines at the nearby airport. Being self-employed, when times were slim, he liked the fact he had income, health care, and was still able to put in hours at his primary career.
