That episode was actually more in the spirit of the original Star Trek series than STD's premier. ST TOS episodes nearly always had a social message.

I thought it a bit... odd, but I didn't have a problem with it. In fact I found Bortus' mind being changed by the Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer story amusing. However: If they go too far with that kind of thing, to the point it distracts from the entertainment value, I'll stop watching. ST TOS always got their message across while still being entertaining.
