Many of my family members think I am a clone of my uncle. . Ok maybe not a clone but they think we are almost identical. I disagree but given our many similar interests and especially our admiration for firearms, fast cars, fast boats and anything mechanical I can see why they would think that.

I was thrilled when he texted me about a boat prospect that he was worried might be too good of a deal to be real. Why? Because I know how street smart he is and I knew if the boat was legit he was about to buy something fun.

Long story short the boat was indeed real and we will be having a hell of a time on the Elizabeth river and lake Norman this summer.

Hopefully this video will embed. This thing is getting me excited at idle. I can’t wait to experience wide open throttle.

It sounds downright NASTY at idle.


This should be a little better on gas than his old twin engine 30ft Scarab.

I like just about anything with a two stroke.

Please change your lower unit gear oil. Every 50-100 hours. And, inspect your propshaft seals, expecting various external stuff to find a way to cut the seals. Use only Mercury High Performance Gear Lube +. Do not use anything else.

I have extensively and personally tested HPGL+ lubricant at my lab and at SwRI and in US Coast Guard go fast boats. Do not use anything else.

She is fully & freshly rebuilt, top to bottom along with a few enhancements. This Mercury is ready to chain smoke & rip apart the slow four strokes on the lake. My uncle is OCD about maintenance almost to a flaw.

He even has a back up Mercury outboard should this one blow up. His loyalty and enthusiasm towards Mercury products spans decades and the almost rabid level of passion rivals my love of Suzuki.

That would make a great ringtone !!!

I miss the old inline 6 cylinder Mercury's. If you have ever heard one fully raced prepped with 6 stingers lined up nice and neat you'll understand why, they would flat out Scream.

I'm a 2 stroke addict in motorcycles and small engines. But I almost never consider the big outboards that I have that are actually 2 strokes in the same category. That's probably because they never sound like 2 strokes while running as the exhaust note is buried underwater.
Yup you get that nice sound when flushing them out of the water, but not anywhere else.
Now if there was some above water exhaust note that would be enjoyable to hear at full song.

I'm reporting you to the snitch line at the EPA.

If you get them airborne they will scream loudly although only for a brief moment.

To this day my dad still harbors some animosity towards my uncle for getting his twin two stroke engine Scarab airborne multiple times in the Chesapeake bay as we encountered some tug boat wake. I thought it was radical (yes I want to bring back that word in a positive light ) but my father was not amused...he credits it with blowing out his lower back.

It was not a small Scarab either 28-30ft would be my guess.

And here I was expecting to see something with a detroit in it!

That is awesome. Nothing like a two stroke boat motor for torque and outright raw power. Their lightweight attributes compared to fourstokes only make it much better. Use quality oil and treat your gas. That sounds powerful.

That should be a ball. Be careful too.

Cool!! Nothing sounds like a 2 stroke v-6 Merc. Madness describes it perfectly.

I have a 4 bladed SS prop on the main, it screams!Boat only hits 36kts, but it gets there NOW!
Useful in the ocean from time to time. Typical cruise is @ 18kts @ 3000rpm.

The best outboard I ever owned was an early 90's 100hp Mercury 2 stroke on a 20ft Alumaweld fishing boat. Once on plane it would use a thimble full of fuel and cruise at 28mph all day long. The 15hp kicker was just as reliable and fuel efficient as the 100hp.

Some assholes ended up stealing that rig and I never had another boat and motor combination that came close to that setup.
