I acquired what was described as a 25 foot flag pole for installation at my home. Ended up being a 40 foot pole (above ground).
I have all the space in the world, so I can place it however I wish. I live in a story and a half, but don't want anything to look out of place from a proportion standpoint.
Is there any sort of rule of thumb on this, or does anybody have any personal experience? I'm finding safety distances online, but nothing from an appearance/proportion perspective.

old rugged cross40' is pretty tall. I would say 50-60' would be ideal.

bendableIf you are in town ,
And get prior clearance from the H.O.A. regarding height and diameter of said pole.
Size of and number of flags allowed,
And decibel levels of flapping flags in a 16 m.p.h wind.
And times that flags may displayed.
Safety, Situational Awareness and proficiency.

Beyond that, I think it's a matter of personal preference and how it fits into your other landscaping. Do you want it to be seen from the road/street? Take that into account as well.

MikeinNCYou will need a saluting battery for alerting the neighbors as to Colors. There’s usually one out front of your local VFW (you can borrow them when no one’s there, and if you ask they will tell you No, it’s a game they play
)
Also need either a live bugler for 1.Prep to colors, 2. Colors and 3. Retreat at sunset
Or a PA system with the aforementioned music.

Thanks. The safety distance from power lines was height plus a minimum of 10' as well.

. Just want to choose as correctly as possible, as it's going to take a 4' cube of concrete to set it, so my choice will be fairly permanent.

HRKDon't forget lighting, if you have to run electricity to get the appropriate lights in the ground to keep it lit up at night unless you are going to raise it at dawn and take it down at dusk every day...
Of course a good solar light for the top helps with that....
then again having to climb up 40 ft to change out old rechargeable batteries isn't always ideal.

smlsigI understand that you live in an unrestricted area but in our village the flagpole cannot exceed the height of your home…

CPD SIGI don't know if there's a specific distance if you're in an unrestricted area. So I'd go with two things-
What looks nice.
IF something happens (a good storm), the flagpole won't hit the house if it falls.
HRK brings up a good point: Unless you're doing Revelry / Colors and Taps, the Flag needs to be illuminated at night. A decent light, mounted to the house / garage. light on the ground with power coming from the house / garage... solar lights have come a long way.
Then there's the Truck on the top of the pole.

drill sgtSuiteable concrete base to support the "wind load" based on pole height as well as actual size of the flag when flown from top of pole even during unusual not normal wind conditions..... You do not want to put a flag that looks so tiny at the top of the pole but yet not one that is so large it looks out of place on a shorter pole....... drill sgt.

Johnny 3eaglesSuggest the correct size flag for that height flagpole. For illumination you can buy an Astronomical timer. That's what I use and it keeps excellent time. I have an outdoor LED spotlight connected to the timer. I also use a solar flagpole light, in case the power goes out.
If you're goin' through hell, keep on going.
