First, unlike SN I do not do most of my own mechanicing. I took my 2010 Tundra in for service. My wife noticed the brakes feeling weird. I had not noticed. So I had them check them out. Their analysis is that due to corrosion I guess. The front rotors, pads and calipers all need replacing to the tune of almost $1000. The rig has 120k miles on it and am not sure about any brake work before I got it with maybe 90k on it iirc. I am guessing not. On previous service they usually stated the brakes still had pad, fwtw. Does this all seem crazy or believable. I suspect I could by parts $500 or a little less. But do not wish to tackle myself. Is $900 to a $1000 sound right for OEM parts and dealership work? Thanks guys. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

Not an expert and don't have a Tundra. For my Toyota truck, I expect to pay around $500 for rotors and pads (and usually fluid change). Assuming calipers is about $300+ in parts, $1000 seems about ballpark for dealership; likely a little cheaper at an independent shop (in my experience). If you can do the job for half price, the price you were quoted is not bad. Considering they have to pay mechanic, service writer, cashier, maybe a lot boy or two, you know, that overhead stuff. On a bad day it may take you 5 hours to do it (rusty stuff), if you can make more in that 5 hours, let them do it.

The Toyota dealership will use oem parts for the job. I am good with that. I am sure one kind find better parts but oem are not junk. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I Am The Walrus |
I have helped a couple people with brakes. When I say help, I mean I swapped rotors and pads for them. One was a GMC, he took it into town in Lawton, OK and was quoted $850. The service guy said "Yeah, I'm a retired 1SG and I take care of you guys." Buddy called from the parking lot and asked if I can do brakes. Said he'd buy me dinner anywhere. Deal. Got it done and got my dinner and dessert. Few months later another LT with a Lexus sedan went to Lexus in OKC and was quoted $1,200. This was 2010 when $1,200 went further than $1,200 in 2023. He gave me enough notice and I guided him to Rock Auto where he bought front pads, rotors, synthetic oil, oil filter, cabin air filter and engine air filter for <$600. Changed them for him and got me a lunch and dinner for the work. They're easy to do. If you were close to central Florida, I'd help you out for a meal or two. _____________

Seems good rotors, calipers, and pads would be close around $500 including shipping from Rockauto, so $1,000 from the dealer seems about right. Be sure they are using OEM though. Dealers make money on the parts as well and a lot of times the dealer's cost is close to Rockauto's prices. The Powerstop kit including the calipers is also in that price range. I have their rotors and pads on my F350. They make less dust and have more initial bite, but don't stop my truck any better than stock. The front pads separated from the backing plates, so I'm not really impressed with them.

Rockauto front and rear parts in a kit for $525. I’d find a local mechanic to do all four corners for the same price.

PowerStops are MADE IN CHINA! Unless there's some sort of design defect, or you've got a special need/application, you can't beat OEM Brakes! I did’t recommend the PowerStop kit and said orc should make sure the dealer is using OEM. wcb6092 said "Why not upgrade and forget OEM.” and provided a link to the PowerStop kit without calipers. I disagreed based on my actual experience, why are you quoting me? And, in the post above yours, Oz_Shadow is quoting the price for a PowerStop front and rear kit that isn’t even as good as the one wcb6092 linked.

^^^I quoted you because it was relevant! I was supporting your dissatisfaction w/ the PowerStops and providing a 'potential' reason for the lack of quality that left you 'not really impressed with them'. Others may not know they're Made in China, and many may want to know that! Not all quoting is done to challenge a statement/position and/or disagree with what was posted...Well, at least in my case. ____________________________________________________________ If Some is Good, and More is Better.....then Too Much, is Just Enough !! That is a PowerStop kit which I would steer very clear of. Poor quality all around. If they are putting on NEW Toyota Calipers, not just rebuilding them, new Toyota rotors, pads, and fluid exchange that is a good price for having someone else doing it. If they are rebuilding your calipers or using non Toyota parts. Then not so much. ———————————————— The world's not perfect, but it's not that bad. If we got each other, and that's all we have. OK, sorry. I’ve been trying to help my son with his Calc 1 college class, which I haven’t seen in 35 years and even then, I think I got a C. I’m a little on edge.

calipers, rotors and pads at $500 per side is perfectly reasonable, and if its OEM parts actually a bargain. on a truck that age I would have them do the lines as well which should add about $100 per side. “So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong, and strike at what is weak.”

Good point, I will talk with them about the brake lines. Thanks for the suggestion. "Practice like you want to play in the game"

I have three different Toyota shops I’ll use locally, depending on what I need done. The Toyota dealer I’ve used gives a 15% discount on repairs for Costco members. Might be worth checking into. "Attack life, it's going to kill you anyway." Steve McQueen...
