So, I bought some radios to use when we go gallivanting around in the LX. It has 22 channels (FRS/GMRS).

Am I understanding correctly that GMRS licenses are no longer required for these combo radios w/ less than 2W transmit? I can use all 22 channels up to 2W now? GMRS license only required for 5W / repeater? (not that I understand all this, just that the radio I have seems to be all usable w/o any license).

Also, sounds like with this new policy, new radios will be coming to market that support 2W for all of these 22 channels (currently, 0.5W for the FRS channels). May want to upgrade my radios then.... Dang.

I've not heard anything about non licensing, and a quick Google search doesn't reveal any info about such a thing.

As I understand it, an amateur license is still required to operate them legally. However, since millions of those little radios have flooded the market the past ten years or so, this is not enforced at all.

I could be wrong though.

I believe enforcement is handled by the mattress tag police.

As I recall, from long ago, no license is needed for those.

It has nothing to do with amateur radio license.

Most of the handheld radios I've seen were channeled for both FRS and GMRS. A license was required for GMRS use. No license is required for FRS.

With GMRS, you can set up a repeater, with a high antenna to give more range. Find an unused channel, set up the tone squelch and have at it. It was for business use, like you see at Costco, and similar. There were GMRS radios, with no FRS channels.

Now apparently the FCC has seen fit to continue its uninterrupted string of making a pig's breakfast from everything it touches. Impractical, inefficient, unreasonable, unmanageable, hopelessly overly complex and unenforceable.

So last year, I could only use channels 1-7 with 0.5w FRS, 8-14 FRS. 15-22 only with GMRS license.

Now I can use channels 1-22 as long as less than 2w, right? No license required?

Btw, are there any reserved channels? Like CB channel 9 for emergencies?
