Buying a Pellet Smoker
Bumping this for more input

Well I went to the Yoder dealer and looked them over. Very nice grills. I just could not justify the price difference over the RecTeq. But that is based on not being able to see the RecTeq in person. I did decide to raise my sights a little and went bigger with the "Bull" the RT 700. So it is currently in route. I hope after it gets here and I see it in person that I still feel that I made the right choice. My new project is to find good pellets and acquire some rubs and spices and decide on my first cook.

Thanks for all the input.

I think you will be hard pressed to find better pellets than BBQR’s Delight contest mix, Lumberjack competition, would be a close second. Traeger pellets suck, too much bark in their shit.

No doubt the Yoder is built like a tank, I had a 640. Recteq isn't built as heavy but their pid is supposed to be great. Steel guage isn't everything. I will say that Yoder's customer service was fantastic when I needed them.

I am going to the Yoder dealer tomorrow but I am feeling about the same. After watching some Youtube videos of people using the RecTeq as a grill I am leaning that way. Yoder will have to completely wow me to justify spending 2x over the RecTeq.

Yep, original version. It’ll turn into a fireball if you aren’t paying attention, but that ability can be leveraged for some flame-kissed goodness as well.

Mine can, it has a sear box on the side, basically a propane grill that will get to 700F to sear meat - or cook burgers.

Yep, original version.
Is there more than one version? I'm thinking of buying one of these -- is there something I should know?

Right now, the two that I'm looking at are the RecTeq Bullseye for $399 and the Traeger Pro 575 at $642. The Traeger has more features, wifi etc, but about $250 more than the RecTeq. When used for grilling or searing, it looks like the RecTeq can get a lot hotter than the Traeger. Decisions, decisions . . .

Why a Yoder?
bc after shooting for over 4 decades I learned a little something about going the "other" route.
Some folks never learn

My Yoder YS640s can do that over a wood flame all day long.

Just pulled the trigger on a Rec Tec 590. The Yoder was a tank but more grill than I thought I would use to justify the cost.

We’re about to move to Wichita, KS and lucky for me Yoder is built right up the road in Hutchison, KS. Think I’m going to have to support the local guys.

While you're over in Hutch, look up Roy's Pit Barbecue. It's on west 4th. They're not open Mondays, and they close when they run out of meat.

I know BBQ and sauce is kind of a personal thing, but in my opinion, they have the best ribs I have ever had and I buy their BBQ sauce by the gallon.

I used to make it there several times a year for work. Since I retired, It's hard to find a reason to make the 3 hour drive.

And so I don't drift the thread too far, I picked up my Yoder YS640S last Monday at All Things Barbecue in Wichita. They are the dealer.

Well if you ever feel the need to get down that way again let me know. I get up to Hutch/Yaggy for business all the time.

And yeah, going to stop in to All Things Barbecue tomorrow. Meeting a client down the street for lunch at the Monarch so figured it’s a sign that I need to get in there. How long did it take between the time you ordered and it showing up?

Hmm, good to know. Better close on the house before I order it then.
