I am an unapologetic watch-nerd. I like everything about them, and find myself spending much time on forums and blogs reading and geeking-out on every facet of the subject. One aspect that draws me to watches is the connection and story that one can have with a watch over the years. I don't think I've ever heard one quite this amazing though.

I thought of SF when I watched this story. I know we all appreciate vets here, and thus I thought I would share this video. This piece is by Hodinkee. They are superb at this type of media.

That was really powerful! Amazing, it reminded me of how close I came to being assigned to Viet Nam and what my life would have been like, assuming I survived....

To hear his measured voice clearly and eloquently recount having (paraphrasing) grabbed his .45 and a couple of grenades to head toward the machine gun. To see his eyes well with tears when his mind goes back to his brothers... ... It would be hard for me to have more respect for one man.

I'll say this too, at his age, he still has some guns on him. He seems quite fit.

Also, from a watch-nerd angle, if he weren't using a NATO strap, that watch would still be in the jungle. I use NATO straps any time I'm doing anything really heavy where if it were to fall off, it would be lost. Springbars do fail. Most repeatably when hit with 7.62x39. But also just when wet with sea water and/or when corroded or fatigued.

Can you suggest some watch forums to visit?

I like watches but have only a basic understanding of them from a collectible standpoint.

Would like to get a Rolex but I am sure there are things to know, that would help dial in to a smarter purchase.

Thanks for any suggestions.

I tend to hang around TimeZone. It is not necessarily the best forum available (older forum technology, and not a ton of activity), but I'm rooted there with friends, so ...

I'll also happen across the others..
